Sequentialists

Sequentialists are a research-oriented body, distinct from the order of Librarians, who maintain that the numerical designations of the Tower's levels, commonly called floors, are not arbitrary but encode a rational, and potentially navigable, structure. Their principal doctrine, articulated in the Principles of Sequence, posits that the apparent disorder in floor numbering arises from a "cataloguing lag" between a floor's discovery and its proper mathematical assignment.

History of the Order

The early foundations of Sequentialist thought are traced by internal histories to a footnote in the Supplement to the Eleventh Concordance, Clause 7.α. The clause, concerning the proper classification of "self-contradictory geometries," was appended with a small marginal observation by an unknown scribe: "The number precedes the thing, or the thing demands the number?" This query is considered seminal. The first formal gathering of the Sequentialists occurred in the antechamber to Archive 44-F, approximately two centuries prior to the ratification of the Nineteenth Concordance, though the exact date is lost due to a subsequently enforced re-cataloguing of the chamber itself.

The order's growth was sporadic and largely confined to lower-tier archivists and independent surveyors. Its legitimacy was formally, if ambiguously, acknowledged in the Twenty-Third Concordance, Annex D, which lists "Sequentialist researchers" among the "permitted non-Librarian entities for purposes of vertical cartographic inquiry," provided their activities do not "impede the smooth application of concordant law." This acknowledgement is often cited by both supporters and detractors as proof of the order's marginal but sanctioned status.

Core Tenets and Methodology

Sequentialists reject the common administrative stance that floor numbers are purely nominal identifiers, akin to catalogue codes. They argue that the numbers possess an intrinsic, though occluded, logic. Their primary working hypothesis is the "Doctrine of Latent Adjacency": that any two floors whose numbers share a defined mathematical relationship (e.g., Fibonacci sequencing, prime factoring, or harmonic resonance) are, in some dimensional sense, closer than floors with arithmetically distant numbers. This is not merely a theoretical claim; Sequentialist expeditions are noted for traveling between floors like Floor 89 (The Gilded Stacks) and Floor 144 (The Resonant Choir)—numbers related by the Fibonacci sequence—in search of "interstitial manifolds" or "numerical shortcuts."

Their methodology involves exhaustive cross-referencing of expedition logs, architectural surveys, and even the decay rates of standard-issue ink across different levels, seeking correlations with number patterns. A significant portion of their published work involves complex numerological analysis of floor numbers in relation to dates of discovery, the number of steps in a primary staircase, or the volume of a floor's central atrium.

Major Projects and the Great Sequence

The order's most ambitious and controversial undertaking is the construction of the Great Sequence, a proposed re-mapping of the entire Tower into a single, coherent numerical progression. The project admits of several competing models. The Alpha Model, championed by the Vestibule School, argues for a base-12 system originating from the (theoretical) Sub-Basement Omega. The Sigma Model, developed in the Spiral Stacks, posits a double-helix of twin numerical series, one ascending, one descending, that interlock at "nodal points" corresponding to floors with perfect square numbers.

These models are not merely academic. Adherents have been known to petition the Librarians for the official re-numbering of floors to "correct" the catalog. Undeterred, Sequentialists maintain their own parallel registry, the Provisional Sequence, which is considered apocryphal by the broader Tower community.

Criticism and the Problem of Aperture 7

The primary criticism leveled against Sequentialism is its failure to produce a consistently verifiable predictive tool. Detractors, often aligned with the Empiricist Cartographers' Guild, point to the notorious case of Aperture Seven. Sequentialist calculations strongly indicated that bypassing Floor 312 via the Aperture would lead to a floor whose number was a derivative of 312. The expedition instead emerged into The Liminal Gallery, a space with no fixed number designation at all, severely undermining the model used. Sequentialists counter that the Gallery's lack of a number is, itself, a data point confirming a "numerical singularity," a concept they had previously theorized.

A more philosophical critique, advanced in the Treatise on Nominal Anchors, questions the very premise. It argues that applying sequential logic to the Tower is a category error, as the Tower "contains its own antecedents; its structure is one of semantic, not spatial, proximity." To a Sequentialist, this is the height of obscurantism.

Current Status and Known Holdings

The Sequentialists maintain chapter-houses, called "Nodes," on several floors, most notably on Floor 55 (The Prime Vault) and within the Western Wing of the Infinite Regression. Their archives are rich with speculative maps, algorithmic treatises, and volumes of "numerical phenomenology." They publish the irregular journal Progressions, which is archived under Metaphysical Cartography - Speculative, Category 7-D.

While their theories remain unproven by the standards of concordant scholarship, the order persists. As one Librarian anonymously noted in a review of a Sequentialist petition, "Their error is not in seeking order, but in seeking an order that repeats. The Tower specializes in singularities."
