Alpha Model
MS 8624.55 · Practices and doctrines
Definition
The Alpha Model is the designation applied to the founding architectural scheme of the Tower's lower catalogue, being the first systematic arrangement of holdings by floor-number rather than by subject-similarity. It is attributed to the office of the First Registrar and is conventionally dated to the earliest recoverable recension of the Fifth Concordance, though the Concordance itself does not use the term. The Alpha Model remains in force for all floors below the 900-series and is cited, amended, and quietly disregarded in roughly equal measure. Under the Alpha Model, a holding is assigned to the floor whose number is the arithmetic mean of the floor-numbers of the two holdings to which it most closely relates, rounded toward the odd integer. This produces the characteristic discontinuities of the lower Tower, where adjacent floors may differ in subject by several orders of administrative kind.Relation to Sigil Alpha
The Model takes its name from Sigil Alpha, the Clasped Gauntlet, whose imprint is required on the transference of any holding between floors under this arrangement. The connection is procedural rather than doctrinal: because the Alpha Model permits the largest volume of transference of any standing scheme, the Clasped Gauntlet is stamped more frequently on lower floors than anywhere else in the Tower. Custodial staff at Floor 311 estimate a rate of four hundred and twelve impressions per working quarter, a figure disputed by the Bureau of Impression Counts, which maintains its own ledger on Floor 297.Critique and rival arrangements
The Alpha Model has been challenged repeatedly, most consequentially by the Priority-by-Obscurity Model, which holds that placement by arithmetic mean systematically buries paradox-bearing works in well-trafficked corridors. The Temporal Recursion Model, endorsed by the Central Registry of Precedents, advances a similar objection on the grounds that temporal citation density is destroyed by mean-rounding. Neither has displaced the Alpha Model below the 900-series, though both are authoritative above it. The Retro-Causal Ripple Model offers a competing account of why the Alpha Model was adopted at all, arguing that the founding arrangement was not chosen but rippled backward from a later, failed reorganisation. This reading is supported by an oddity in the Eighth Concordance, Annex C, where a transference order appears to have been issued three days before the holding it concerns was catalogued."Where two holdings are equally related, the floor with the lower stair-count shall be preferred, save on Tuesdays."
— Fifth Concordance, Clause 19
Standing disputes
The most enduring grievance concerns Floor 417, where the Alpha Model's mean-rounding has produced a shelf of holdings that relate to nothing on their own floor and to each other only by the accident of arithmetic. The Custodian of Floor 417, a position held without interruption since the Winter of the Second Recension, has filed eleven petitions for reassignment. All eleven were returned with the note that the Model is working as intended. A secondary dispute opposes the Alpha Model to the Static Congestion Model of Queue Formation, which observes that mean-rounding concentrates transference traffic on the odd-numbered floors and generates standing queues in their stairwells. The Bureau of Coincidental Resonance has countered that the queues are themselves a resonance phenomenon and should be damped under the Vect Resonance Model rather than re-routed.Current status
The Alpha Model continues to govern placement below the 900-series and is administered in conjunction with the Model IV Cataloguing Automaton, whose Sentient Scribe performs the arithmetic on each transference petition. Above the 900-series, the Model yields to the Spire Model, whose rules are held on Floor 1004 and are, by long convention, not discussed on lower floors. Readers intending to consult the original recension should note that the stairwell between Floors 388 and 389 is closed for repointing until further notice; the detour via Floor 402 adds approximately forty minutes.See also
