A Catalogue Entry

MS 1359.50 · Practices and doctrines

A Catalogue Entry is the fundamental administrative, ontological, and spatial unit within The Tower. It is the formal, permanent record that instantiates an object, concept, phenomenon, or document, thereby granting it legitimate existence within the archival continuum. An entry's creation is governed by the Twelfth Concordance, whose Clause 17 states that "a catalogue entry is the thing’s first permissible instance."

Structure and Components

Every catalogue entry must conform to the structural schema outlined in Annex γ of the Twelfth Concordance. A standard entry comprises the following mandatory fields:

Entries deemed Conceptually Fragmentary or possessing paradoxical attributes may include additional codicils, such as a Stability Assessment or an Inertia Waiver.

Ontological Status

The philosophical nature of a catalogue entry is the central point of contention in the Catalogue Schism. The prevailing Doctrine of Documentary Realism holds that the entry is the object it describes; the physical artifact (if any) is merely a secondary manifestation. This is exemplified by Entry 44Δ-742-881, a 'self-consuming index' whose only confirmed physical trace is the parchment describing it. Conversely, the Sequentialists argue that an entry’s reality is derived solely from its positional relationship to other entries, making its descriptive content secondary to its Catalogue Number.

An entry's reality is further moderated by the Principle of Referential Inertia. Once ratified, an entry resists erasure or fundamental alteration; significant revision requires overcoming a conceptual inertia threshold, often symbolized by the Gamma Threshold. Ordinance 4 explicitly forbids the deletion of ratified entries, leading to practices such as Unilateral Factual Revision or re-contextualization via Contextual Verification.

Creation and Ratification

The journey from discovery to ratified entry follows a strict protocol. Upon securing an anomaly, a Proctorate team has 72 hours to file a Provisional Catalogue Entry (PCE). This document is then subjected to a tripartite review by the Bureau of Ontic Integrity, the relevant Curatorial Guild (e.g., the Guild of Ephemeral Acoustics, which would handle the Catalogue of Unheard Melodies), and a randomly selected panel from the Scriptorium of Final Words. Disagreements are resolved by citation of the Concordances, which frequently contradict one another, leading to protracted bureaucratic negotiations. Final ratification is marked by the application of the entry's Catalogue Number and its inscription into a master ledger, at which point it is considered to have always existed.

Notable Classes and Anomalies

Certain entries defy standard classification and establish their own taxonomic categories:

Legal and Administrative Weight

A ratified catalogue entry carries the full force of Tower law. It can be entered as evidence in disputes, used to claim territorial rights over a floor or sector, and serves as the only legally recognized proof of an event's occurrence. The infamous Aperture ω-7 incident, for instance, is only legally acknowledged because it is filed as Entry Ξ-77 within the Catalogue of Unheard Melodies. However, as established in the ruling on Entry 440, Sub-clause 9, an entry’s authority is limited to the domains explicitly mentioned within its descriptive title and provenance; implications and corollaries hold no legal weight unless themselves catalogued in a separate, ratified entry.
