Entry Ξ-9.441
Entry Ξ-9.441 is a certified null holding of the Standing Catalogue, entered in the third recension of the Xi substack and retained there without amendment since the winter of the year 4,112. It is not the record of a thing. It is the record of a thing having been recorded and then, upon inspection, found not to have been. The distinction is sustained by the Office of First Entry at considerable expense and is defended, most years, at least once.
Entry Ξ-9.441 occupies a single folio, double-ruled, with the Identification field left blank and the Subject field occupied by the phrase a remainder of the remover, in the hand of a clerk who did not sign. The folio bears no Alpha glyph, the Final Entry not having been executed against it; it bears, instead, an unnumbered round seal impressed upside down, which the College of Seals has twice declined to certify and never once declined to discuss.
Origin
The entry was opened in the week following the completion of the Xi substack's reconciliation, an exercise in which 2,208 holdings were read against the folios immediately preceding them and struck out where the two agreed. In every case the strike was accompanied by a note of the clerk responsible. In the case of the folio now numbered Ξ-9.441, the folio was struck and the folio preceding it was struck, and no note was found in either place. The junior archivist on duty, Perrin Voss, recorded the event in the day-book in the single line for which he is chiefly remembered: "The subtractor was not in the ledger."
Voss's line was read as a fault in the day-book and corrected, whereupon the correction itself was found to contain no error. By the time the matter reached the Office of First Entry it had been referred four times, and the heading it now bears was assigned to close the referral rather than to settle it.
Composition and the dual-entry question
Under Resolution 12 every holding must be filed against a second, parallel folio, so that the entry and its counterpart may be read against one another at need. Entry Ξ-9.441 has no counterpart. The parallel folio was opened, headed, and left blank, and by the reckoning of the protocol this is a compliance and not a lapse. The Exchequer of the Folio has ruled twice that a blank parallel folio, if it is fully blank, satisfies the duality; a third ruling, in the matter of Ledger of Coherence, Entry 1, held that a completely blank folio is a thing and the absence of it is a different thing. The two rulings have not been reconciled, and the resulting standing instruction to the binders of the Xi substack is that the parallel folio must be blank but not empty. The binders have maintained this division since 4,118 without a single reported failure.
Scholarly disagreement
The principal dispute concerning Ξ-9.441 is whether the entry is a holding at all or a notation of a holding's absence. The Concordance of the Second Measure maintains that any entry that cannot be read against a subject is a notational artefact and may be bound at the end of the volume with the other slips, uncounted. The Concordance of the Third Measure disagrees in terms: "That which was struck, and whose striking was not entered, is not thereby unentered. It is entered twice and read once" — Concordance of the Third Measure, Annex 9, clause 3.
"The blank is where the remainder keeps itself. Do not turn it to the wall of the shelf."
— Handwriting of the Ninth Archive, marginalia, folio 41
An earlier reading, now abandoned save by the keepers of the Referential Catalogue, held that the missing note of the clerk was the true subject of the entry and that the entry had in fact been completed and subsequently eaten. Against this the Office of First Entry has entered its standing objection: that a note may not be eaten, only the hand that wrote it, and the hand of the anonymous clerk is still in the day-book, though never again on the same line twice.
The Xi substack
The Xi substack, on the ninth gallery of the western stair, comprises 3,100 folios, of which 2,208 are reconciled, 891 are pending, and one is Entry Ξ-9.441. A shelf on that gallery was measured in the summer of 4,201 as 41 centimetres wide and found to be an inch wider the following spring. Further measurements to the same effect were taken and the finding was recorded in the annex to Entry 891-Sigma. The gallery has since been reshelved at the far end, and the walk from the bottom of the west stair to the bottom of the west stair is a matter of housekeeping, not of the Register.
Status and consultation
Ξ-9.441 is not classed as a Primary Entry and may not be cited as one, nor filed as a Ledger Entry without the countersignature of the Keeper of the Xi Substack; the keeper has signed it three times, once in error. It is listed on the catalogue roll as a permanent open item and is not expected to close. No such entry may be filed, however, until its number has been read out at the Office of First Entry and a notation made of the folio preceding it in the hand of the clerk who did not open it. That clerk has not been found, and the entry has been accepted, for the past eleven centuries, with the notation torn away.
A single emendation has been attempted. At some point after the strike it was proposed to annex the entry to the Ledger of Coherence as a correction of an error, and a clerk was sent to fetch the folio. The folio was not on the shelf. A second clerk was sent to look for it and found only the blank parallel folio, in its place, within its own dimensions. The motion was withdrawn, and the withdrawal written on the blank side.
