Provocative Query
MS 9470.31 · Practices and doctrines
Provocative Query is a formal classification for an inquiry deemed to possess a quality of inherent, unresolved potentiality, as defined by the Ordinance on Inherent Potential (Concordance 45, Section 9, Subsection C-iii). It describes a Registry Query that, upon submission or subsequent contemplation, demonstrates a tendency to proliferate unintended subordinate inquiries, challenge foundational assumptions of a Registry, or otherwise provoke a state of administrative or conceptual disequilibrium. Its handling is governed by the procedures outlined in Annex B of the Ordinance.
Definitional Criteria
The classification hinges on the assessment of three core attributes, as enumerated in Clause 12 of Annex B. First, the query must resist immediate resolution by standard Certification protocols, suggesting an internal conceptual tension. Second, it must demonstrably generate at least two ancillary queries of a non-trivial nature within a standard contemplative period (defined as seven Tower cycles). Third, the query must be formally contested by no fewer than two accredited parties, each citing different sections of the Concordances. An inquiry meeting any two of these criteria is automatically referred for a Potentiality Review.
Procedural Handling
Upon identification by a Sequencer or an Archivist of sufficient grade, a Provocative Query is sequestered. The originating Query Text is transferred from its initial Registry to the Atrium of the Unspoken Query for stabilization, a process involving its inscription upon Zero Significance Material panels to prevent further conceptual drift. The Keeper of Unspoken Components is then required to file a Query of Precedence to invoke Numerical Precedence and suspend all standard processing timelines. A tribunal, convened under the authority of the Sixth Librarian, must then determine whether to archive the query indefinitely, release it for amended re-submission, or escalate it to the Directorate of Cartographic Review for potential reclassification as a foundational cartographic anomaly.
Historical Precedents
The most cited instance is the so-called Crisis of the Unanswered Query, precipitated by a Registry Query directed at the Atrium of the Unspoken Query itself, which created a recursive logical impasse. More recently, the ongoing "Whisperwood Designation Dispute" stems from a query regarding the taxonomic boundaries of audibly provocative flora, which was subsequently logged in the Whisperwood Folio. This query was deemed Provocative after it generated seventeen distinct ancillary queries concerning the ontology of "provocative" sounds and the jurisdictional authority of acoustic registries versus botanical ones.
Scholarly Disagreement
A significant doctrinal rift exists between the Formalists and the Potentialists. The Formalist school, adhering strictly to Concordance of Acquisition protocols, argues that a Provocative Query is merely a mis-filed inquiry, its "provocative" nature arising solely from its incorrect placement within the Registry architecture. They contend that re-filing according to the First Concordance's original taxonomic principles would resolve all such instances. The Potentialists, conversely, cite the spontaneous manifestation of the Atrium of the Unspoken Query within the Somatic Stacks as evidence that certain queries possess generative ontological power, becoming active agents in the Tower's structure. They view the classification not as an administrative label but as a descriptor of a query's inherent, unstable state of being.
Related Artifacts and Practices
The handling of a Provocative Query often necessitates the use of specialized tools and materials. The Sceptre of Deferred Query is ritually employed to formally suspend a query's active potentiality during tribunal proceedings. Stabilization procedures frequently involve the application of Forgotten Resin to the physical margins of the Query Text to prevent the leakage of provocative semantics into the ambient Archival Dust. Furthermore, the practice of Pre-emptive Audition was developed specifically to identify and neutralize the acoustic precursors of a Provocative Query before they can fully manifest, though its efficacy is debated.
Impact on Tower Governance
The existence of the Provocative Query classification underscores the Tower's acknowledgement that its own systems of knowledge are not merely descriptive but can be interactively shaped by the inquiries directed at them. It represents a critical procedural loop within the Concordance system, allowing for the formal accommodation of meta-inquiry—questions that challenge the framework within which questions are asked and answered. The tribunal records for each Provocative Query are themselves archived, forming a secondary corpus that catalogs the boundaries of the Tower's own epistemological architecture.
