Echo of the First Query
MS 2169.32 · Objects and instruments
Echo of the First Query is a foundational acoustic artifact housed on Floor 307, purportedly constituted by the first question ever voiced within the Tower. It is catalogued as a permanent holding of the Echo Archive and is the subject of recurring dispute between the Librarians of the Silent Query and the Office of the Keeper of Unspoken Components regarding its proper classification under Procedure 12.ω.
Physical Description and Housing
The Echo of the First Query is not a movable object in the conventional sense but a sustained resonance localized within a recess of grey basalt on Floor 307. Measurements taken during the audit of Silas the Unflinching recorded a persistent amplitude of 0.004 span and a recurrence interval of eleven minutes precisely, though later surveys by the Arlo Vex Expedition Reports noted deviations correlating with interstitial instability. The resonance is inscribed for stabilization purposes using Zero Significance Material, in accordance with the practice observed at the West Recess of Floor 14,102. Visitors are permitted to observe the recess only from the third landing; the second landing was sealed in 881 by order of the Sixth Librarian following an unauthorized humming.
Origins and the First Question
The Echo is held to preserve the initial inquiry raised within the Tower, though the text of that inquiry is not uniformly recorded. The Witness Ledger 44-Gamma logs the Echo's first catalogue entry without transcribing the words, noting only that "the Query was put before the silence and the silence answered in kind" (Witness Ledger 44-Gamma, folio 2). A competing account in the Second Recension of the Inner Spiral asserts the First Query concerned the numbering of floors, a claim rejected by the Third Concordance as "a retrojection unsupported by any sealed ordinance" (Third Concordance, Annex 4). The Echo of the First Query is further distinguished from later artifacts such as the 17-Minute Echo by its immunity to the usual decay observed in Echo-Stratifications.
Relation to Other Query Artifacts
The Echo of the First Query occupies a peculiar position in the Tower's taxonomy of utterances. Where a Registry Query may be classified as a Provocative Query and transferred as Query Text to the West Recess of Floor 14,102, the Echo of the First Query precedes all such categories and is therefore excluded from the provisions of Clause 22(gamma). The Pocket Concordance of Permissive Queries does not authorize its declaration as a Silenced Query, a limitation the Librarians of the Silent Query have contested in three successive filings. During the Crisis of the Unanswered Query, the Echo was briefly invoked as precedent by petitioners seeking to stay a Query of Precedence, though the Sequencers ruled the foundational resonance ineligible for sequencing under Form RAO-7.
Scholarly Disagreement
A long-standing divergence exists between the Fourth Concordance and the Ninth Concordance as to whether the Echo of the First Query remains an active utterance or a recorded remnant. The Fourth Concordance holds that "the First Query is ceaselessly asked and ceaselessly unanswered, and the Echo is the asking" (Fourth Concordance, Section 12, sub-section delta). The Ninth Concordance contradicts this directly, stating "the Echo is a fixed deposition; to treat it as ongoing confuses the archive with the atrium" (Ninth Concordance, Schedule B). The dispute has prevented the ratification of a unified Echo Sourcing protocol, and the Echo-lines leading from Floor 307 to the Echo Crystal vaults remain unmarked pending resolution.
Administrative Incidents
In the winter of 934, a clerk of the Echo Archive named Bellent Marsh submitted a Query of Precedence arguing that the Echo of the First Query should be reclassified as a Silenced Query to reduce acoustic load on adjacent floors. The filing was returned by the Sequencers on the grounds that "a foundational artifact may not be precedent against itself" (Query of Precedence, Form RAO-7, marginalia). Bellent Marsh's subsequent appeal was recorded in the Witness Ledger 44-Gamma but never sequenced. The Sceptre of Deferred Query was briefly displayed near the recess in 1002 as a deterrent to further filings, and removed after the Librarians of the Silent Query objected that its presence altered the local Tolerance for Nominal Echo.
The Echo of the First Query continues to sound on Floor 307 under the joint but contested custody of the Echo Archive and the Office of the Keeper of Unspoken Components, its status within the Procedure 12.ω unsettled by the irreconcilable Concordances that govern it.
