Echo Sourcing
Echo Sourcing is the formal process of identifying, verifying, and authorizing the origin of Echo Sound phenomena prior to their certification by the Aggregate Echo and application within the Echo-Dreaming protocol. Governed primarily by Annex 7 of the Ordinance of Perpetual Echo, it is a procedural discipline distinct from the theoretical study of echo-generation outlined in The Echo Theory.
Primary Source Classifications
The Ordinance of Perpetual Echo establishes three primary source classifications, each with its own verification pathway.
- Class (Native Echo): Sourced from Tower regions where the Echo-Hawk is endemic. Verification requires a matched feather-sample and a corroborating deposition from a resident Librarian of at least Fifth Spiral standing. The Echo Archive maintains a registry of authorized nesting ledges.
- Class (Architectural Echo): Echoes arising from specific structural resonances within the Tower’s fabric, such as the hum of a particular spiral stair or the whistle through a named ventilation aperture. Sourcing requires a blueprint cross-reference and a decibel-log spanning no less than one full Cyclical Reckoning period.
- Class Γ (Referential Echo): Echoes generated by the citation or near-citation of existing archival holdings. This is the most common source for ceremonial use, and its verification hinges on a demonstrable paratextual link, as defined in the study of Paratextual Echo.
The Verification Pipeline
Once a potential echo is identified, it enters the verification pipeline, a multi-stage process involving several Tower bodies.
- Provisional Recording: The raw sound is captured on a provisional slate of Echo-Glass, marked with the finder’s credentials and the proposed source classification.
- Cross-Referencing: The slate is submitted to the Echo Archive, where clerks cross-reference the signature against the Aggregate Echo Map and the tempering records of authenticated Echo-Glass to detect anomalies or prior claims.
- Aggregate Audit: If the Archive raises no objections, the slate proceeds to the Aggregate Echo for certification. The Aggregate Echo’s audit involves a harmonic dissolution test and a review of the sourcing documentation.
- Final Inscription: Upon certification, the echo is ritually transferred to a permanent pane of Echo-Glass using violet ink, the sourcing of which is itself overseen by the Ink-Subcommittee per Clause 404.
Disputed Sources and the Unnumbered Echo
The system is not without contention. A persistent scholarly debate concerns the status of echoes that defy the three-class system. The Quelling of the Unnumbered Echo is often cited as a precedent for rejecting unclassifiable sources, yet revisionists point to Clause 12.7 of the Ordinance, which permits “provisional classification of novel resonant phenomena.” This loophole was notably invoked during Annual Reckoning 892, leading to the controversial inclusion of a hum from the non-catalogued 407th-floor broom closet in that year’s dreaming cycle.
Furthermore, the distinction between Class (Architectural) and Class Γ (Referential) is frequently blurred. The echo produced by reading the Third Concordance aloud in the Hall of Whispers, for instance, is officially classified as Architectural (resonance of the Hall), though many argue it is fundamentally Referential (citation of the document). This ambiguity was a central point of testimony during the proceedings for The Echo of Unfinished Business.
Sourcing Violations and Penalties
The falsification of an echo’s source constitutes a Grade-3 Archival Violation. Penalties, as stipulated in the 12th Revision of the Manual of Cyclical Reckoning, range from suspension of dreaming privileges to reassignment to a non-resonant stack. The most severe penalty on record was applied following the “Whispered Forgeries” scandal of Reckoning 734, wherein seventeen panes of Echo-Glass were found to contain sourced sounds from a non-Tower entity, violating the principle of contained reality. The subsequent doctrinal clarification led to the formal treatise The Whisper vs. The Echo.
Material and Ritual Constraints
Echo Sourcing is not merely administrative; it is a material process bound by specific constraints. The violet ink used for final inscription must be sourced from lichen colonies registered with the Ink-Subcommittee. The Echo-Glass used for certification must be tempered according to patterns on file with the Archive. Perhaps most critically, sourced echoes intended for the Echo-Dreaming protocol may only be recorded onto glass that has itself been verified as acoustically neutral, a state determined by its lack of a recorded Architectural Echo. This recursive verification requirement ensures the purity of the sourced sound, though it considerably lengthens the sourcing timeline for high-demand echoes.
