Potentiality

Potentiality is the formal classification for any subject, dispute, or object whose existence or resolution is held in a state of ontological suspension, pending a determination that is not required to arrive. It is the foundational substrate of Pending Resolutions and a core taxonomic principle within the Tower’s archival logic, governed primarily by the Principle of Deferred Judgment.

The concept arises from the Tower’s core paradox: to catalogue something is to make it real within the archive, yet some subjects defy such definitive inscription. Potentiality provides the bureaucratic and ontological mechanism to hold these subjects in a state of “realized unrealism,” where their unresolved nature is itself the catalogued fact. As such, it is distinct from non-existence; a Potentiality has a definitive entry, a shelf location, and a bureaucratic weight measured in ardors within the Cardiac Cistern.

Doctrinal Foundations

The primary legal framework for Potentiality is established in the Twenty-Second Concordance, which famously asserts that “no authority may be derived from potentiality alone.” However, this is contradicted by Annex Γ of the same Concordance, which grants procedural standing to “any petition rooted in sufficient unresolved potential.” This inherent contradiction is itself considered a meta-potentiality, catalogued under Petitions of Infinite Regress.

The First Manifesto further complicates the matter by stating that “interpretation is the hydraulic pressure that brings potential into being.” Thus, the act of defining or debating a Potentiality is seen to increase its ontological density, a process monitored by the Cistern’s ardoric readings. The Doctrine of Metastable Reference directly ties the continued reality of a catalogued subject to the internal consistency of its entry; inconsistency causes a collapse into a Potentiality, which is then transferred to the Spire of Unfinished Business.

Measurement and Arbitration

The unit of measure for Potentiality is the Ardor, defined as one ten-thousandth of the “fervent potential” contained within the Cardiac Cistern’s central reservoir at the vernal equinox of Archive Year 34,112. Disputes over the ardoric weight of a given Potentiality are settled by the Office of Unresolved Metrics, whose findings are, by design, always provisional.

A common application is in the arbitration of Pending Resolutions. When a dispute is classified as such, it is assigned a Potentiality Quotient (PQ), calculated from the number of contradictory Concordance citations it accrues, the ardoric flux it generates, and the seniority of the librarians involved in its deferral. A PQ exceeding 7.3 mandates transfer to the Spire of Unfinished Business.

Notable Controversies

The most significant scholarly dispute concerns whether Potentiality is an active state or merely an absence. The Guild of Clockwork Purists famously argued that the act of drawing a Theoretical Blueprint for a machine invalidates its theoretical purity, as the blueprint itself represents a reduction of infinite potential to a single, flawed actuality. Conversely, the Scribes of the Latent Word maintain that Potentiality is the most potent form of existence, as it contains all possible outcomes simultaneously. They point to the Chamber of Echoing Drafts, where unsent letters are curated, as evidence that unrealized communication exerts a greater archival gravity than any dispatched missive.

Physical Manifestations

While primarily a conceptual and legal category, Potentiality is known to have physical effects within the Tower. Corridors within the Spire of Unfinished Business are reported to have non-integer door numbers, and the stairwells sometimes fail to connect two consecutive floors, leaving climbers in a state of literal potential transit. Furthermore, ink reserved for recording Potentialities (Designation Q7-Vellum) is observed to fade and reappear at random intervals, never achieving a permanent state.

The Archive of Half-Sighs on Floor Ξ-207 curates objects that were almost invented, including several models of the Almost-Perpetual Motion Device, each suspended one conceptual gear away from function. The ambient ardoric reading in this archive is consistently the highest in the Tower outside the Cistern itself.

Procedural Role

In daily archival practice, the invocation of Potentiality is a standard method for forestalling definitive categorization. A librarian may stamp a dossier with the “Sigil of Open Potential” (a circle bisected by a wavy line), thereby transferring the matter into a procedural limbo where it accruates interest in the form of ancillary citations and sub-disputes. It is estimated that 34% of all Tower holdings have passed through a period of formal Potentiality at least once.

The ultimate fate of a Potentiality is, by its nature, unresolved.
