Archive of Half-Sighs

MS 5585.11 · Places and structures

Archive of Half-Sighs is the designated repository on Floor 388 preserving acoustic fragments intermediate between a complete exhalation and a withheld breath, catalogued under the administrative class of partial respiratory disposals. The collection is maintained by the Guild of Conduit Technicians in accordance with Concordance 308 and draws its primary material from the upper reaches of the Conduit of Sighs.

Establishment and Jurisdiction

The Archive of Half-Sighs was formally chartered in the latter half of the Third Cataloguing Cycle, three years after Addendum 12 clarified the status of Half-Imagined Edifices and six years prior to the Edict of Ambiguous Frication. Jurisdiction was assigned to the Guild of Conduit Technicians by Concordance 34, which states that "the custody of interrupted exhalations shall rest with those who measure the silence between them" (Concordance 34, Spiral 2, Clause 9). The founding custodian, Clerk Vellen of the Narrow Stair, recorded 1,204 fragments in the first inventory and noted that none exceeded 0.4 seconds in duration.

A persistent dispute concerns whether the Archive duplicates holdings of the Archive of Resonant Ephemera on Floor 422, where the Certified Sighs of the Closed Book are preserved. The Verificationists hold that a half-sigh ceases to be partial once sealed, and therefore belongs on Floor 422; the Contextual Purists counter that sealing does not confer completeness, citing the provisional sigil Ψ of Floor 709, The Gallery of Half-Ideas as analogous to unfinished acoustic form.

Physical Arrangement

The Archive occupies a rectangular annex 11.3 meters by 7.1 meters, lined with 88 copper-alloy drawers numbered by aperture marking rather than sequence. Each drawer corresponds to a vertical segment of the Conduit of Sighs, the cylindrical shaft approximately 0.8 meters in diameter running between Floor 449 and the lower Pneumatic Atria of Central Atrium 3. Fragmentary dictations for the Treatise were reportedly collected at the monitoring station of the Conduit on the 188th Floor, and a portion of those dictations deemed incomplete were transferred to Floor 388 in Year of the Archive 997.

Visitors are permitted to listen to no more than two fragments per visit. The restriction is enforced by a senior attendant and is not waived for Librarians.

Classification of Fragments

Fragments are sorted into three grades by the Guild of Conduit Technicians: Grade Alpha (breath initiated, cut at onset), Grade Beta (mid-exhalation arrest), and Grade Gamma (terminal taper without release). The Sighs of Departed Bureaucrats are excluded from Grade Gamma unless a concordant ruling from the Archive of Provisional Origins certifies the fragment as proto-bureaucratic. In Year of the Archive 997, the Spleen objected to the exclusion, arguing that the The Fading Sigh of Clerk Theobold demonstrated continuity between half-sighs and full departures; the objection was logged but not adjudicated.

Administrative Half-Lives

Under Concordance XII.7.a, the administrative half-lives of curdled sighs are set at forty-seven to nine hundred procedural cycles, a range the Archive applies to Grade Beta fragments showing acoustic coagulation. The Half-Processed Intake office contests this, asserting that half-sighs are neither curdled nor whole and thus fall outside the Concordance's scope. The resulting ambiguity is cited in Concordance 308 as grounds for biennial re-recension of the Floor 388 ledger.

"A half-sigh held in the drawer is a petition never delivered; its half-life is the patience of the archive."

— Edict of Ambiguous Frication, Recessional Note 3

Scholarly Disagreement

The Pneumatic Leakage Hypothesis for the origin of the Sighs of Departed Bureaucrats relies on silence measured at the Conduit of Sighs following the Ordinance of Cessation 73-C. The Verificationists argue that half-sighs on Floor 388 predate the Ordinance and therefore cannot derive from leakage. The Contextual Purists respond that the Ordinance merely certified a pre-existing condition, and that Floor 449, "The Sighs of Unfinished Bridges" — where the Conduit begins at a sealed aperture — indicates an architectural intent to half-sigh from the foundation. The dispute remains unresolved, and the Archive of Provisional Origins declines to issue a binding recension pending further dictation.

Clerk Vellen of the Narrow Stair's original inventory was amended 14 times before his departure to the Spleen, and the current ledger notes only that "the count is approximate and the approximation is administered."
