Permanent Fade Event
MS 4645.47 · Events and incidents
Permanent Fade Event is the formal classification for any occurrence in which a batch of Lysander Parch fails to reset after its prescribed 72-hour cycle, leaving inscriptions permanently visible and thereby causing irreversible withdrawal of the holding from the senses of readers. The first such occurrence, the Permanent Fade, was documented in the late Spiral 17 era and subsequently produced the Fade Assessment Amp Restoration procedure as well as the standing Certification to Permanent Holdings.
Definition and Threshold
An event is entered into the register of Permanent Fade Event only when the Fade Index of the affected holding has been confirmed at or beyond the irreversible range defined in Certification to Permanent Holdings, Annex 2, and when the failure of reset has been attested by the Rite of Silent Assessment. The Addendum to the Seventeenth Concordance holds that "no inscription which has endured past the 72-hour bound without reset shall be reckoned recoverable, and the floor upon which it lay shall be noted in the marginalia of the Sigma-Class Logging", a position the Third Concordance appears to contradict by permitting appeal to the Guild of Theoretical Mechanicsgreat Calcification Event where mechanical fault is shown (Clause 9, §iv).
The distinction between a Permanent Fade Event and the slower condition of Perceptual Fade is maintained by the Office of the Lower Apertures, which observes that the former is instantaneous in certification though gradual in cause, whereas the latter "names a process by which a holding becomes unavailable to the senses of readers" without necessarily invoking the parchment (Perceptual Fade, recension of Spiral 17).
The Founding Incident
The original Permanent Fade took place on Floor 118-Delta during the late Spiral 17 era, when a consignment of Lysander Parch inscribed with the holdings of the Incident of the Unfurling Minute was not returned to its quiescent state. Clerk Vell Sorrath, then subordinate to the Scriptorium of the Coiled Stair, recorded that "the markings stood bright through the third dawn and none of the attending Librarians could induce the customary dimming" (Vell Sorrath, Marginal Note 118-D). The resultant data loss was certified permanent under what would become the Certification to Permanent Holdings.
Following this, the holding later designated LLAS-001 became the first subject of a completed Fade Assessment Amp Restoration procedure, performed across eleven days and fixing its Fade Index at 4.0. The Prime Fade remains the secondary designation of that holding.
Administrative Consequences
In the wake of the Permanent Fade, the FAAR was developed to forestall recurrence, though the Great Calcification Event (1911) later demonstrated that calcified floors resist the remedy. The Ongoing Event LS-80 is presently monitored under the same provisions, with the Sigma-Class Logging updated at each aperture.
Disputes arose between the Office of the Lower Apertures and the Guild of Theoretical Mechanicsgreat Calcification Event over whether a Permanent Fade Event on a calcified floor should be logged as Permanent Glow or as terminal Sigil Fade. The Addendum to the Seventeenth Concordance settled the matter for the Spiral 17 recension by assigning such cases to the Permanent Glow ledger, a ruling the Third Concordance does not acknowledge.
Scholarly Disagreement
A continuing contention concerns the status of the Sigh That Curdled, which some clerks of the Scriptorium of the Coiled Stair claim precipitated the original Permanent Fade by disturbing the air of Floor 118-Delta. The Rite of Silent Assessment expressly forbids the introduction of breath during assessment, and the Office of the Lower Apertures has ruled that "the curdled sigh is commemorative only, and bears no causal weight in the recension of Spiral 17" (Office of the Lower Apertures, Ordinance 12, Clause 3). The Guild of Theoretical Mechanicsgreat Calcification Event maintains the opposing view in its lesser annexes.
Standing Provisions
Any floor experiencing a Permanent Fade Event is to be sealed per Certification to Permanent Holdings and its number entered in the Sigma-Class Logging. Visitors may not bring quills onto such floors. The Fade Assessment office conducts review at intervals no shorter than the 72-hour cycle that the parchment failed to keep.
"That which has faded beyond the recoverable range shall be named, and the name shall not be spoken above a whisper in the presence of the parchment that failed."
