Librarian Order

The Librarian Order is the certified administrative and archival body vested with sole and perpetual stewardship of The Tower pursuant to Clause VII, Addendum 3. It constitutes the executive, legislative, and record-keeping authority for all catalogued holdings and their attendant existential domains. Its executive functions are centralized within the Administrative Spire, while its operational mandate extends to all numbered floors, including those provisionally catalogued and those subject to contradictory spatial claims.

Constitutional Basis

The Order's authority derives from the Concordances, a self-referential and frequently amended legal corpus. Clause VII, Addendum 3 is the foundational instrument, though its primacy is routinely contested by precedents established in later clauses. The Order interprets its charter as granting it custodial rights over all phenomena manifested within the Tower's architecture, a principle formalized as the Doctrine of Intrinsic Reality. This doctrine holds that a thing catalogued is, by virtue of its entry, real within the Tower, rendering questions of external veracity moot and administratively irrelevant.

Organizational Structure

The Order is subdivided into a complex hierarchy of ranks, corps, and specialized chapters. The foundational rank progression begins with Junior Librarian and ascends through Third, Fourth, and Fifth Orders, with higher echelons rarely referenced in open documentation. The Order does not recognize all entities claiming association with it. The Order of the Drowned Quill, for instance, listed by some sources as comprising Fourth Order Librarians, is expressly disavowed in Circular 891.4-Alpha, though the Circular's own authenticity has been questioned by the Contradiction Librarian.

Controversies and Schisms

The Order's history is marked by procedural schisms. The most significant ongoing debate concerns the ontological status of the Librarians themselves. A faction within the Literalist Chapter argues that, as products of the Tower's own archival logic, Librarians are themselves catalogued entities and thus subject to the same principles of intrinsic reality as any other holding. This view is anathema to the mainstream administration, which maintains a strict subject-object distinction between cataloguer and catalogued.

Furthermore, the existence of a "Zeroth Order" or pre-constitutional Librarian body is hinted at in the marginalia of several early Concordances, but no official record confirms it. Some archivists, like Librarian Aris, have privately postulated that the current Order is merely a recursive iteration of a prior, identical administration, a theory that remains speculative and officially discouraged.

Operational Reach

The Order's purview explicitly includes all floors, regardless of their logical consistency or physical accessibility. It claims authority over expeditions, including Guided Descents, which require a Third Order Librarian or higher for supervision per Clause XVII.4. Its mandate also extends to the curation of styles and techniques, such as Late Imperial Chiaroscuro, which are treated as discrete, catalogable subjects. The Order maintains that its stewardship is neutral and procedural, concerned solely with the act of cataloguing rather than the nature of what is catalogued, a stance that is frequently challenged by the paradoxical content it manages.
