First Analytic Desk

Definition and standing
The First Analytic Desk is a fixed administrative station of the Tower, charged with the initial intake, sorting, and provisional classification of cataloguing requests submitted to the analytic service. It is the senior of the two analytic desks by order of establishment, though not by order of precedence in every matter, a distinction that has generated more correspondence than any other single feature of its jurisdiction. Requests received at the First Analytic Desk are, as a rule, forwarded to the Second Analytic Desk at Floor 710 for decomposition, save where the matter falls under botanical oversight or where the request exhibits chronological anomaly.
The Desk holds botanical oversight of the analytic floors, a responsibility of considerable practical weight given the proliferation of appendix ferns in the shelving interstices of Floors 708 through 712. It also maintains that requests concerning chronological anomalies are to be forwarded to the Desk of Temporal Urgencies rather than held for second analysis, a position confirmed by the Ninety-Second Concordance in clause 14(g) and contested by the Third Concordance, Annex 18, on the grounds that a chronological anomaly is by definition a matter of secondary ontological intent and therefore admissible to second analysis in the first instance.
Administrative relations
The relationship between the First Analytic Desk and Desk Omega has been the subject of recurrent dispute. Desk Omega is held to be administrateral to, but functionally distinct from, both analytic desks, and it serves as the mandatory first step for any issue falling under an Omega protocol before escalation. The First Analytic Desk has at various points argued that this renders it third in sequence rather than first, a claim the Concordance of Standing Ratifiers declined to entertain in its recension of Winter 4 of the Year of the Uncounted Stacks.
Elsewhere in the analytic service, Desk Alpha, Desk Beta, and Desk Gamma maintain offices of adjacent jurisdiction. Desk Delta, a second-analytic bureau within the Delta Council, occupies a parallel function with respect to the Bureau of Acquisition and does not consider itself answerable to either analytic desk. The Echoing Desk and the Desk of Lateral Correspondence handle matters referred outward, while the Desk of Sigillary Verification attests the seals affixed to any request that has passed through first analysis.
"Requests are forwarded to the Second Analytic Desk from this desk. The forwarding is not optional, and the record of forwarding is the record of receipt."

Botanical oversight
Botanical oversight was granted to the First Analytic Desk by the Third Concordance, Annex 18, in the same instrument that first documented the classification of the Desk-Fern. The oversight encompasses the identification, pruning, and relocation of desk-associated flora throughout the analytic floors, including the taxonomy set out in Desk Fern Taxonomy of. The Desk's botanist-clerks maintain that the Desk-Fern Controversy remains unresolved insofar as no two recensions of the taxonomy agree on whether the specimen catalogued at the Reference Desk is properly a desk-fern or an Appendix Fern in a state of reference-adjacency.
The practical consequences of this oversight are mundane and occasionally damp. Ferns in the intake corridor are cut back twice yearly, in the week preceding the Concordance readings. Visitors are reminded that the aisle between Stacks 4 and 5 is kept clear for hose access and that specimens in that aisle are not to be used as shelf-markers, notwithstanding three recorded instances of exactly that.
Chronological referrals
The Desk forwards requests concerning chronological anomalies to the Desk of Temporal Urgencies under an arrangement whose original instrument has never been located. The Second Analytic Desk holds that such requests carry secondary or tertiary layers of ontological intent under clause 14(g) of the Ninety-Second Concordance and should therefore be received, not sent. The two desks have exchanged fourteen formal letters on the point since the Concordance's issue; the fourteenth, from the Second Analytic Desk's registrar, is quoted in full in Mapping the Receding Reference Desk as an example of correspondence that recedes.
The Deconstructor-General Arlo Vex, whose testimony is recorded elsewhere in the archive, has stated that the Second Analytic Desk "renders them admissible to the archive." Whether the First Analytic Desk renders them anything at all is a question the Bureau of Concordance Citation has declined to rule on, noting that it concerns a matter of first instance and is therefore outside its remit.
Standing disputes
The most durable disagreement concerns precedence with Desk Omega. A second concerns the botanical oversight boundary at Floor 713, where the Receding Reference Desk is believed to sit and where fern growth has on two occasions advanced beyond the cut-line. The matter of the receding reference desk was referred to the First Analytic Desk in the Year of the Second Recension and returned unopened three winters later with the note that the desk in question was no longer at the address to which the referral had been addressed.
Holdfolio 710-A-447, created as a result of the Second Analytic Desk processing a request to catalogue "the set of all catalogues that do not contain themselves," was originally received at the First Analytic Desk and re-forwarded twice before reaching its present station. The forwarding slips survive; the original request does not.
