Filing of Contradiction

MS 9195.97 · Practices and doctrines

The Filing of Contradiction is the formal, triplicate-submission process by which a demonstrable incompatibility between two or more catalogued holdings, or between a holding and an active procedural mandate, is registered with the Librarians for adjudication. It initiates the Dispute Resolution process, as codified in the Concordances and their associated procedural annexes.

Formal Requirements

The Filing must be submitted on the standardized Form M-7b (Rev.), completed in full across all three copies. Key mandatory fields include the precise citation of the contradictory elements (e.g., "Third Concordance, Clause 14" versus "Ordinance 4, Subsection B"), a description of the nature of the contradiction (categorical, temporal, quantitative, etc.), and the proposed Contradiction Protocol Severity Classification. The filing party—often a Junior Archivist or a Floor Steward—must also include a notarized Filing of Intent, which precedes the main submission by a minimum of 72 hours. Incomplete filings are held in a state of Provisional Pending until remedied, a status which itself has generated considerable contradictory rulings.

Procedural Pathway

Upon receipt, the triplicate forms are separated. Copy Alpha is routed to the office of the relevant Contradiction Librarian for initial assessment. Copy Beta is entered into the Central Log of Contested Holdings, which exists in a non-physical annex between Floor 7,414 and Floor 7,415. Copy Gamma is sealed in a Ceremonial Lead Casket and interred within the Archives of Potentiality on Floor -302, a practice whose necessity is debated but which is required by Annex Alpha of Form NOC-4a Filing Instructions. The filing then triggers a mandatory Cooling Period of no less than fourteen days, during which parties may submit amicus briefs or supplemental evidence, before proceeding to a Contest of Contradiction.

Catalytic vs. Incisive Classifications

A critical function of the Filing is the assignation of a preliminary severity classification, which guides the subsequent adjudication. A Catalytic contradiction, such as the historic Pol-Vek Contradiction, is one believed to generate new, derivative holdings through its very existence. An Incisive contradiction, exemplified by the Contradiction of the Glass Spheres, is one that cleanly severs a flawed logical branch, requiring excision or amendment. The filer's proposed classification is advisory only; the final ruling is made by the presiding Contradiction Librarians under the framework established in Contradiction Protocol Severity Classifications.

Scholarly Disputes

The ontological status of a Filed Contradiction during the Cooling Period is a matter of persistent scholarly debate. The Forty-Seventh Concordance asserts that a contradiction, once filed, exists in a state of "procedural actuality" regardless of eventual resolution. However, Ordinance 4 explicitly states that only a Concordance Contradiction Ruling (YSP 460) can confer factual status upon a dispute. This meta-contradiction led directly to the creation of the Contradiction Librarian role and is often cited in foundational texts like On the Permissibility of Internal Contradiction Within a Sufficiently Documented System. Most practitioners adhere to the Principle of Contingent Filing, treating the contradiction as both real and unreal until the ruling is issued.

Common Errors and Rejections

Approximately 34% of initial Filings are rejected due to formal errors. Common pitfalls include: citing a holding that does not officially exist (a Phantom Citation), failing to secure the required Third-Party Witness Sigil, or attempting to file a contradiction between a physical law of a specific floor and a general Concordance, which is expressly forbidden by precedent set in Case Omega-7. Furthermore, a Filing may be deemed frivolous if it contradicts a document already under a Moratorium of Amendment, a state detailed in Contradiction Flagging procedures. Successful navigation of these requirements is considered a core competency for advancement within the Archival Corps.
