The Protocol for Cross-Floor Contradiction
MS 3219.15 · Practices and doctrines
The Protocol for Cross-Floor Contradiction, formally designated as Annex 7.Delta.12 of the Contradiction Protocol, is the governing procedure for the assessment, containment, and institutional reconciliation of mutually exclusive truths that manifest across distinct numbered floors of the Tower. Its primary function is to prevent the localized paradoxes catalogued on individual floors from interacting in a manner that could destabilize the architectural or logical integrity of the Tower’s vertical structure.
Scope and Activation
The Protocol is invoked automatically upon the detection of a Cross-Floor Contradiction Signature, defined as any catalogued entry, physical phenomenon, or recorded event on one floor that, by its stated properties or observed behavior, renders impossible the continued existence or validity of a catalogued entry on another floor. Common triggers include:
- The appearance of an object classified as “unique” on Floor 411 simultaneously appearing in an “irreproducible” state on Floor 1,747.
- A law of physics described as fundamental on a lower floor being demonstrated as non-universal on a higher one.
- A biographical timeline for a catalogued entity (e.g., “The Clockmaker of Aperture Gamma”) containing irreconcilable dates of death across two separate archival entries.
Activation is logged via a Cross-Floor Contradiction Flag (CCF), which initiates a mandatory Protocol Inquest led by a designated Contradiction Librarian.
Containment Phase: The Quarantine Spiral
Upon flagging, the implicated floors enter a Containment Phase. The stairwells, pneumatic message tubes, and inter-floor observation grates connecting the contradictory floors are sealed under the authority of the Quarantine Spiral, a temporary administrative construct. During this phase, all cross-references between the floors are suspended, and the contradictory entries are reclassified under a shared provisional taxonomy: “Subject to Cross-Floor Reconciliation (CFR).”
The Quarantine Spiral is not a physical location but a procedural overlay, maintained by a dedicated cadre of clerks who intercept and re-route all inter-floor communications. Its duration is determined by the assessed Severity Classification of the contradiction, ranging from Sigma (minor, resolvable within 30 Tower-cycles) to Omega (existential threat to contiguous floor integrity).
Reconciliation Procedures
Reconciliation follows one of three pathways, as dictated by the presiding Contradiction Librarian after review of the relevant provisional protocols.
- Contextual Demarcation: The most common outcome. The contradiction is adjudicated to be apparent, not actual, arising from differing contextual frameworks on each floor. A Demarcation Decree is issued, appending clarifying footnotes to each entry (e.g., “The properties described herein hold only within the resonant frequency range of Floor X”). The entries are preserved, and the quarantine is lifted.
- Precedential Override: One floor’s claim is granted precedence based on archival seniority, superior evidential quality, or alignment with a higher-order Concordance Ruling. The overridden entry is not erased but moved to a subordinate Paradoxical Objects annex on its floor of origin, with a pointer to the prevailing truth.
- Synthesis and Memorialization: For Omega-class contradictions where neither truth can be subordinated, a synthetic third truth is generated. Both original entries are retired to a dedicated Memorial Archive, and a new, coherent entry—crafted to satisfy the evidential requirements of both source floors—is promulgated in their stead. This process requires authorization under Memorialization Protocol Alpha and represents the final stage of Contradiction Mitigation.
Interface with the Pol-Vek Framework
The Protocol explicitly interfaces with the institutionalized dialectic maintained by Protocol MAP-4 concerning the Pol-Vek Contradiction. Any cross-floor contradiction that touches upon the foundational Pol-Vek axioms (e.g., “All knowledge is contiguous” vs. “All knowledge is discrete”) is immediately elevated to a special review panel. The panel’s deliberations contribute directly to the ongoing Contest of Contradiction, with outcomes sometimes resulting in amendments to the Protocol itself.
Scholarly Disputes and Amendments
The most significant unresolved debate concerns the Protocol’s jurisdiction over emergent contradictions—those that only manifest in the interstitial spaces between floors, such as in elevator shafts or the gaps between shelving units that span multiple levels. The Third Concordance asserts that such interstitial spaces fall under the Protocol’s purview (Clause 22.7), while the Fifth Concordance (Amendment 4) argues they constitute a separate ontological category requiring a dedicated Chen Protocol. This dispute is the subject of an ongoing Filing of Contradiction, and practice varies by administrative sector.
The Protocol was last substantively amended in YSP 815 following the “Silent Stairwell” incident, wherein a contradiction between Floors 309 and 310 regarding the nature of acoustic dampening resulted in a temporary, self-reinforcing zone of absolute silence that impeded all reconciliation efforts. The amendments introduced mandatory non-acoustic signaling protocols for all Quarantine Spiral operations.
