Contradiction Filings
MS 6159.82 · Practices and doctrines
A Contradiction Filing is the formal instrument by which a previously undocumented contradiction between two or more Catalogued Entities is registered with the Tower’s administrative apparatus. Governed by Clause 117.4, it initiates the procedural sequence that culminates in Contradiction Loading and the eventual archival of the contradiction within the Contradiction Annex. The filing is distinct from a simple observation of inconsistency; it represents a claim of structural incompatibility that, once validated, alters the ontological status of the entities involved within the Tower’s reality.
Standard Filing Components
All valid Contradiction Filings must be submitted on Form C-Δ/3 (Rev.), which requires the following elements:
- Primary and Secondary Assertions: The precise, verbatim citations from the relevant Catalogued Entities (e.g., "Floor 7,412 asserts all corridors lead inward" vs. "Annex 7,412-b asserts Corridor Gamma leads outward").
- Locus of Incompatibility: The specific floor, annex, or conceptual space where the two assertions cannot simultaneously hold true.
- Proposed Severity Classification: The filer's recommendation for initial classification under the severity Classifications (e.g., Incisive, Latent, or Dormant-class).
- Witnessing Librarian Seal: Authentication by a Contradiction Librarian not directly assigned to the involved holdings, confirming the contradiction is not a product of transcription error or misinterpretation.
Filings lacking any of these components are returned to the originator via the Office of Volumetric Assessment, often with a notation regarding the specific deficiency.
The Filing Moment and Procedural Binding
Per the Motif of Perpendicular Time, a Contradiction Filing is considered to have occurred at its Filing Moment, a point determined retroactively by the Chronophagic Registry once the filing is processed. This moment becomes procedurally binding for all subsequent actions, including the commencement of the mandatory Contradiction Audit and the Contradiction Flagging event. The Office of Ontological Integrity oversees the proper application of this binding, particularly for cross-temporal contradictions where entities may originate on different Temporal Axes.
Post-Filing Protocol
Upon receipt and validation by the Bureau of Registry, the filing triggers an automatic sequence:
- Contradiction Flagging:]] The involved holdings are marked with a provisional contradiction sigil, restricting amendments pending investigation.
- Protocol Inquest: A Contradiction Librarian is assigned to conduct a formal inquest, as mandated by Contradiction Protocol.
- Declaration of Contradiction:]] If the inquest substantiates the filing, a Declaration is issued, formally recognizing the contradiction.
- Contradiction Loading:]] The validated contradiction is transferred into the active Contradiction Protocol system for final classification and archival.
Disputed and Rejected Filings
Not all submitted filings are sustained. Common grounds for rejection include:
- Apparent Concordance Contradiction: Where the seeming conflict is already permitted or managed by an existing Concordance.
- Procedural Supersession: Where a later filing on the same locus has already been accepted, invoking principles of Primacy of Form.
- Contextual Harmonization: Where the Contradiction Librarian inquest determines the assertions can be reconciled through reinterpretation (e.g., redefining "inward" as a temporal rather than spatial direction).
Rejected filings are archived on Floor 14,022 with an Unfinished Inventory dissolution code. A filer may appeal a rejection by submitting an Assertion of Primacy filing, though success rates are statistically negligible.
Scholarly Disagreement: The Priority Debate
A persistent doctrinal dispute concerns whether the act of filing creates the contradiction or merely recognizes it. The Primacy of Form school, citing Concordance 92, holds that a contradiction only achieves operational reality upon the completion of Form C-Δ/3 (Rev.). Conversely, the Retroactive Ontology school argues from Concordance 117 that the Filing Moment retroactively binds the contradiction's existence to a point prior to the filing, suggesting the filing is an act of discovery, not creation. This debate remains unresolved and is most active during Contradiction Mitigation procedures, where the chosen theory influences the permitted remediation strategies.
Cross-Floor Considerations
For contradictions spanning non-adjacent floors, the Protocol for Cross-Floor Contradiction applies. These filings require additional clearance from the Office of Volumetric Assessment and are subject to Pre-Clearance Scrutiny to prevent systemic cascade failures. The handling of such filings is often cited in analyses of major ontological events, such as The Elara Contradiction.
