Condensation Conduits

MS 4222.87 · Objects and instruments

Condensation Conduits are the regulated hydraulic and atmospheric channels within the Tower responsible for the transportation, filtration, and occasional manifestation of Pensive Condensation and other psychotropic precipitates. Their operation is governed by a complex web of directives, most notably the Condensation Ordinance, and their maintenance is primarily the purview of the Guild of Vital Conduits.

These conduits form a secondary circulatory system distinct from, yet occasionally intersecting with, the Major and Minor Stairwells. Their efficacy is measured not by volume but by "contemplative fidelity," a metric defined in the Fifth Concordance as the preservation of a condensate's intrinsic catalytic properties from point of origin to terminus.

Typology and Infrastructure

Condensation Conduits are classified into three primary types, as per the Manual for Anomalous Conduits.

Regulation and the Concordances

The legal framework for conduit operation is notoriously fragmented. The Third Concordance establishes the Guild's monopoly on maintenance, while the Fifth Concordance details the "contemplative fidelity" standard. The Sixth Concordance, however, introduces contradictory purity thresholds, arguing that filtration beyond 72% clarity "strips the condensation of its essential melancholy." This disagreement is the source of persistent operational tension between the Guild and the Librarians of source floors like Floor 116.

Enforcement is theoretically managed via the Infinite Registry, which logs all conduit integrity reports. In practice, as noted in a marginalia to Annex γ of the Manual, "Registry verification conduits are themselves subject to condensation-induced corrosion, creating a paradox of oversight."

Notable Conduits and Junctions

The Aorta of Thirst
The largest primary conduit, sourcing from the Visceral Aquifer and running vertically adjacent to Stairwell Beta. It supplies nearly 40% of the Tower's non-potable contemplative fluids.
Aperture 172
A critical junction where Primary and Secondary conduits intersect. It is fitted with a double-valve mechanism described in Figure 4.12, and is a common site for monitoring under the Protocols of Dryness.
The Great Vertical Spiral
Officially designated a tertiary conduit following its malfunction during the Great Dampness. It now operates under restricted flow, its output being studied for chrono-dilatory effects.

Operational Hazards and Incidents

The principal hazard associated with Condensation Conduits is incarnative leakage, where the fluid's psychotropic properties begin to affect the conduit material itself, leading to manifestations of Carnate Hydrography. The Manual for Anomalous Conduits outlines a multi-step containment procedure, beginning with the application of dry theorems and escalating to the invocation of Ghost Nodes for absorption.

The most significant recorded failure is, of course, the Great Dampness of T.Y. 5983. The official report attributes it to a cascade failure in the Great Vertical Spiral's diversion protocols, though a dissenting scholarly faction cites a premature application of the Laws of Melancholic Descent as a contributing factor. The event led to the inundation of Floor 303 and the temporary silencing of the Ventilation Chorus across seven adjacent floors.

Interfaces with Other Systems

Condensation Conduits do not operate in isolation. Their vapor outputs are integral to the operation of the Aerostatic Page-Turning System, providing the necessary humidity differentials for leaf separation. Furthermore, certain acoustic conduits within the Whispering Galleries network are believed to create unverified sympathetic resonances with distant locations, such as the alleged link between Floor 881 and the Chamber on Floor 47.

Transfer of authority over a conduit segment—for instance, from the Guild to the administrators of an Administrative Spiral Beta—requires a formal Ceremony of Conduit Cession, detailed in a sub-clause of the Sixth Concordance. The ceremony involves the symbolic drying of a section of pipe using pages from a deprecated catalogue, a practice the Guild considers "theatrical and hydrologically unsound."
