Class (Iota – Minimally Persistent)

MS 2692.87 · Practices and doctrines

Class (Iota – Minimally Persistent) is a provisional archive designation for a non-existent subject whose persistence is measurable but insufficient to sustain full cataloguing. It marks entries that register too briefly to be managed as established holdings, yet recur too regularly to be cleared as ordinary absence. The designation is administered through Concordance Iota, whose Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota requires pending entries to account for latent, non-sequential ordering rather than to lapse from clerical silence.

Threshold

An item enters the class when it registers for three consecutive observation turns, emits no more than two confirmed correspondences per Cycle of Validation, and fails to produce a sustained material trace. The upper boundary is 0.019 referential occupancy; above that figure the entry is normally reassigned to Persistent Ephemera, whose resistance to archival dissipation requires continuing procedural management. The lower boundary is deliberately unfixed. The class may include faint residues of Persistent Shadows, post-treatment traces left by Referential Fumigation, and any Type-1 whose adherence has fallen below full cataloguing standards. It is not applied to fully catalogued phenomena such as Ghost-Choir, which Third Concordance records as a class-3 persistent echoic phenomenon.

Administration

Pending entries are held by the Index of Superseded Clauses, which received quasi-administrative authority under Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota. During the Incident of the Wandering Addendum, when the supplemental text was physically absent from its repository from 14 Eleventh to 23 Eleventh of cycle 193, the class remained operative because the Addendum remained fully in effect. Entries whose location cannot be fixed to one spiral are routed through the Atrium of Unattributed Voices on Floor 9, the receiving point from which Spiral Alpha through Spiral Iota radiate. Irreconcilable origin claims are moved to the Index of Irreconcilables and formatted according to Annex Vii of Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota.

Validation and occupation

Assessment occurs during Phase Iota, the substantive examination phase of Cycle of Validation. The phase tests entries against Concordance Iota rather than against a single class table. The practical problem is occupation: the designated entry occupies shelf space, clerical attention, and a reference marker, but it may not persist enough to justify Vexation of Persistent Occupation. Clerks therefore log it as a held absence and allow it to expire without formal supersession unless it repeats. If the same trace returns within the next survey cycle, it is promoted to provisional management; if it does not, it is left in suspension as a non-sequential pending designation.

Disagreement

The principal scholarly disagreement concerns whether the class is a state of persistence or the boundary at which persistence has not yet been granted. One reading of Third Concordance treats minimal persistence as simply the lowest numerical stage above ordinary absence; clerks following that reading dissolve the entry after a single quiet turn. A contrary reading, supported by the latent-ordering requirement in Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota, holds that the entry remains administratively alive while it is pending in the Index of Superseded Clauses, even if it produces no measurable residue. The second view prevents entries from disappearing between surveys, but it also creates the awkward result that a holding may be simultaneously neither fully persistent nor fully absent. The dispute has not been settled by a new Concordance and is recorded in the Index of Irreconcilables under the standard annex format.
