Persistence Ladder

Persistence Ladder is the common designation for the Graduated Scale of Hypothetical Durability, a formal framework used by the Scriptorium of the Fixed Ladder to classify the existential persistence of hypothetical objects, entities, and phenomena catalogued within the Tower.Established by Ordinance 4, Clause 14 and subsequently refined by the Motion on the Persistence of Unobserved Corridors, the Ladder provides a continuous spectrum from negligibly hypothetical states to virtually actual ones. Certification via the Ladder is a prerequisite for any subject seeking inclusion in the Permanent Stacks or for any procedural action requiring a defined ontological baseline, such as maintenance scheduling or inter-floor transit.

Class Structure

The Ladder is divided into seven primary classes, denoted by letters of the archaic Greek alphabet, each representing a distinct band of persistence probability.

• Class Θ (Theta – Negligibly Hypothetical): Subjects with a persistence rating below 0.1 Morphen Cubits. These are often fleeting impressions, unrecorded whispers, or the shapes of dust motes in unlit corridors. They are considered administratively inert.
• Class (Iota – Minimally Persistent): Persistence between 0.1 and . Example subjects include the scent of ozone following a failed illumination spell or the after-image of a turning page.
• Class (Kappa – Conditionally Substantial): The most common classification for archived hypotheticals. Subjects in this class (5–20 MC) maintain coherence only under direct observation or within a specifically defined context, such as a Private Scriptorium's jurisdiction.
• Class Λ (Lambda – Recurrently Manifest): Subjects that reappear on a documented cycle or in response to a fixed trigger, with ratings from 20–50 MC. This includes the Seventeen-Hour Echo in the West Ventilation Shaft and most calendrical phenomena.
• Class (Mu – Largely Actualized): A stable classification (50–85 MC) indicating a subject that maintains form and function across multiple observational regimes, though it may lack ultimate causal weight.
• Class (Nu – Persistently Tangible): Subjects (85–99 MC) indistinguishable from fully actualized entities for all standard bureaucratic purposes, including bearing weight, accepting ink, and being catalogued in triplicate.
• Class Ω (Omega – Virtually Actual): The highest certified class, reserved for subjects with a persistence rating exceeding 99 MC. Reclassification to Omega requires a full audit by the Central Scriptorium and is exceedingly rare.

Certification Process

Audits for Persistence Ladder classification are conducted by the Scriptorium of the Fixed Ladder, which maintains the master ledger of all certified subjects. The procedural interface for this certification is the Eastern Auxiliary Ladder, a dedicated bureau that receives applications, gathers initial metrics, and forwards dossiers to the Scriptorium for final ruling.

The audit itself involves measuring the subject's "persistence pressure" using the Ephemeral Gradients system (E1-E9), as formalized by the Nineteenth Concordance. This measurement is then converted to Morphen Cubits and plotted on the Ladder. A subject's class can be revised upward or downward based on subsequent audits, changes in observational consensus, or amendments to the governing Concordances.

Jurisdictional Disputes

The administration of the Persistence Ladder is a source of ongoing bureaucratic tension. While the Scriptorium of the Fixed Ladder holds ultimate authority over certification, the Eastern Auxiliary Ladder asserts maintenance and re-audit rights within its spatial jurisdiction, a claim frequently contested by the Central Scriptorium. These disputes often center on whether the scope of a scriptorium's work defines its jurisdiction, or if jurisdiction is purely a matter of floor and aperture designation.

Furthermore, the Ladder's relationship with the Ephemeral Gradients system is not perfectly isomorphic. A high Gradient score (E8 or E9) typically correlates with a Class or Ω rating, but exceptions exist, particularly with subjects that exhibit intense but narrowly focused persistence, leading to interpretive disagreements between metricians and classifiers.

Canonical Exceptions

The Third Concordance explicitly lists seventeen subjects exempt from Persistence Ladder classification. These include the Ink of the First Scribe, the Foundation Stones of the Tower (hypothetical or otherwise), and any entity that is the subject of an open paradox. Such subjects are annotated in the Fixed Ladder Index with a double-dagger (‡) and are not eligible for procedures requiring a durability class.

A separate but related framework, the Provisional Persistence Index, exists for subjects undergoing active hypotheticalization or whose status is under formal review by a Concordance committee. These are marked with an asterisk and a temporary class estimation, pending final adjudication.
