Class Λ (Lambda – Recurrently Manifest)

MS 6380.91 · Practices and doctrines

Class Λ (Lambda – Recurrently Manifest) is the classification applied to holdings that have entered the archive more than once, by different routes, without any recorded loss in between. It is the second of the four Lambda designations and is distinguished from Class Λ and Class Λ by the requirement that recurrence be documented twice over — that is, that the same item be attested by two independent intake records bearing different seals. The class is administered from the Comparative Intake Desk on Floor Lambda 909, though the governing text remains the Thirty-Seventh Concordance, Annex 2, from which most disputes on the subject derive.

Class Λ is not to be confused with duplication, which is a defect, nor with multiplication, which is a nuisance, nor with the lending of an item to another floor and its subsequent return, which is ordinary traffic. A Class Λ holding is one whose second arrival cannot be accounted for by any of these and whose first arrival remains, on inspection, exactly where it was.

The attestation rule

An item is entered as Class Λ only when two intake records survive that describe it in incompatible terms while agreeing on its identity. The Manifest of Anticipated Arrival and the Transit Manifest are the usual paired sources, having been maintained by different scriptoria since the Concordance of Seals. Where both records agree in every particular, the item is entered as Class Λ-adjacent and given a yellow tab; where they disagree as to the item's dimensions, the disagreement is noted in the margin and does not affect the classification.

The distinction matters chiefly at the point of access. A Class Λ holding may be consulted on presentation of a Certificate of Manifest Visitation countersigned by the floor of first attestation. Where the floor of first attestation is itself in dispute — as it was for the Lenient Atlas throughout the winter of 4,102 — the visitor is directed to the floor of second attestation and asked to return in the spring.

Documented recurrences

The class presently covers 311 holdings. The most frequently cited are:

  • The Lenient Atlas, attested on Floors 404 and 3,118; the two copies disagree on the position of one island, and neither island can be found.
  • The Ninefold Register of the Stones sector, of which four copies exist and three are the original.
  • A brass reading lamp, entered twice in 3,887 and once again in 3,889, which the Comparative Intake Desk has declined to reclassify on the grounds that lamps recur.

The dispute over the second seal

Annex 2 of the Thirty-Seventh Concordance holds that Class Λ requires two seals of different scriptoria. Clause Lambda of the Appendix, however, provides that a recurrence attested by a single seal may nonetheless be classed Λ where the seal is that of the Office of Recurrent Holdings, an office whose seal is described in the same clause as "sufficient to itself." The two provisions have never been reconciled.

The practical consequence is a standing feud between the Comparative Intake Desk and the Office, which has continued since the Reclassification of 3,940, when the Office re-entered forty-one holdings as Class Λ on its own authority and the Desk declined to shelve them. The holdings remained in the corridor outside the Desk for eleven years and were eventually catalogued by a junior clerk, Clerk Adela Forss, as a collection in their own right. Her grievance — that no one had told her the corridor was not a floor — was recorded, dismissed, and is now cited in the training of intake clerks as an instructive case.

"The recurrence of a holding is a fact about the archive, not about the holding. The holding, as ever, has no opinion."

— Manifest Theory Consortium, Second Recension, §14

Relation to the Lambda Coefficient and Protocol Sigma-7

Class Λ holdings are routinely subjected to Specificity Analysis, in which the Lambda Coefficient quantifies the temporal precision of each attestation. Coefficients above 0.87 are referred onward, and referral of a Class Λ item triggers a Vector Beta under Protocol Sigma-7 — a sequence that has, on four recorded occasions, produced a resonance classification before the item in question had been located. The School of Manifest Inventory maintains that this is procedurally sound and that the item is located by the classification. The Consortium does not accept this and has said so in print.

Handling and restriction

Class Λ holdings do not double when handled, contrary to a persistent belief among junior shelvers, but they do accumulate marginalia at a rate the Manifest Verification office has called "unhelpful." Readers consulting a Class Λ item are asked to initial the margin only once per visit and never in the same ink as the previous reader.

No Class Λ holding may be removed from its floor of first attestation except by order of the Librarians under seal, and no such order has been issued since 3,118, when the main Lambda Shaft was brought into service and the question of transport was thought to be settled. It was not settled. Items continue to arrive. The Comparative Intake Desk records each arrival in the ordinary way and enters the recurrence in the ordinary way, and the total stands at 311, and the Desk expects it to rise, and does not say why.
