Iota Triad Dossier
MS 1811.54 · Practices and doctrines
The Iota Triad Dossier is the composite record file assembled whenever a subject is proposed for Status Omega under the Iota Triad criteria. It is not a single document but a bound sequence of three independently witnessed readings — conventionally termed the First, Second and Third Readings — which must agree on three points of correspondence before the file may be laid before the Office of the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity. The Dossier takes its name from the Triad, not from Class, with which it is frequently and incorrectly confused; the confusion is old enough that Concordance Iota now addresses it directly in its preamble.
Dossiers are held in the ninth-spiral stacks, though the binding station itself sits on Floor 9, at the mouth of Spiral Iota. A Dossier left unattended on the binding table overnight is returned to the open shelves; this is the only circumstance in which a file may be re-shelved without a supersession note.
Composition and the Three Readings
A complete Iota Triad Dossier comprises the three Readings, a sealed attestation from the officer who convened them, and a facing sheet recording the floor, date and hour at which each Reading was taken. The Readings are not required to concern the same object — only the same subject — and a subject may be read at three different addresses on three different floors, provided the facing sheet accounts for the divergence.
The criteria for correspondence are set out in Concordance Iota, Annex 2, and were last revised in the winter of the year the ninth spiral was re-lettered. Under the current recension, the Readings must agree on (i) the persistence interval, (ii) the attributed voice, and (iii) the ordinal position of the subject within its own account of itself. The third criterion is the source of nearly all delay. Morbius Iota, then Chief Archivist, recorded in his working memoranda that "a subject which misnumbers itself cannot be triaded until it stops" — a remark later struck from the published recension and preserved only in the Index of Superseded Clauses.
The Binding Protocol and Its Failure
Binding is performed under the Accession Protocol, sections 4 through 9, which require the three Readings to be sewn in order of their taking and the facing sheet pasted down last. The requirement that they be sewn rather than pasted was introduced after the Incident of the Wandering Addendum, when a Dossier was found to have absorbed a stray addendum leaf between its Second and Third Readings and, on rebinding, issued a finding in the addendum's name.
"Where a leaf has entered a Dossier by adhesion and not by sewing, the leaf is the Dossier's and not its author's, and shall be answered for accordingly."
— Concordance Iota, Addendum 9, clause 14
The clause has never been repealed. It has been narrowed twice.
Disagreement: Whether the Facing Sheet Precedes the Readings
There is a persistent scholarly dispute, conducted almost entirely in marginalia, over whether the facing sheet is properly the first or the last element of the Dossier. Concordant Law treats the facing sheet as an instrument of attestation and therefore posterior; the practice of the binding station, which has not changed since the re-lettering, treats it as anterior and sews it first. Thelonius V, whose grievance against Morbius Iota is elsewhere recorded, argued at length that the posterior reading renders every Dossier technically incomplete at the moment of its own taking, and that this is the true reason so few subjects reach Status Omega.
The contrary position, advanced in an unsigned recension held on Floor 9, is that the sheet must be posterior precisely so that a Dossier can be shown to have been finished. Neither position has been preferred. The Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity has declined four times to settle the question, on the ground that to do so would be to rule on a matter already governed by Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota — a claim the Index of Superseded Clauses disputes, since it holds no entry on the point and considers the silence dispositive.
Relationship to Dossier Alpha 707
Iota Triad Dossiers are frequently conflated with Dossier Alpha 707, and the two are indeed adjacent in function: a subject that survives triading may proceed to a Reality Petition Dossier and thence to Zone Alpha Adequate status. They are not, however, interchangeable, and the error has consequences. In the only recorded instance of a Dossier being filed under the wrong series, the subject was triaded twice, attained Status Omega on the second triading, and was then found to have been catalogued on Floor 9 in the interim under a name it had not been given. The file was closed without explanation and the binding station was rebuilt.
Inventory of a Standard Dossier
A typical complete Dossier, as delivered to the Commissioner's office, contains the following:
- Facing sheet, sealed, one leaf.
- First Reading, sewn, with the reader's mark.
- Second Reading, sewn, commonly the shortest.
- Third Reading, sewn, with the correspondence note appended.
- Attestation of the convening officer, under separate seal.
- One wrapper, marked with the spiral and floor of binding.
Dossiers missing the Third Reading are held in the pending sequence at the Index of Superseded Clauses and are not, strictly speaking, Dossiers at all; they are described in the register as triads in expectation, a phrase which has never been defined and which the Potential Floor File cites without comment.
