Spiral Alpha through Spiral Iota

MS 4693.21 · Places and structures

Spiral Alpha through Spiral Iota is the collective designation for the nine primary spirals that radiate from the Atrium of Unattributed Voices on Floor 9, lettered Alpha through Iota in the order of their first survey. Each spiral is a helical corridor of between eleven and eighty-one documented turns, descending or ascending (the record does not agree, and cannot) around a central void of unmeasured depth. Together the nine constitute the only fully surveyed radial system in the Tower. The word "primary" is load-bearing: it distinguishes these nine from the secondary spirals, which are not catalogued as a group and are generally counted only when someone needs a round figure.

Designation and numbering

The letters Alpha through Iota were assigned by the survey party of Archivist-Ordinary Vell Marrow in the winter of the year recorded as 6,112 by the Atrium's own count, a count that begins at the Atrium and has never been reconciled with any other.

The assignment is not sequential by any measure except the sequence of survey, and this has caused difficulty for three centuries. Spiral Alpha is the shortest of the nine. Spiral Iota is the longest, and is the only spiral whose far landing has been entered twice. Spiral Alpha-1, the first landing of Spiral Alpha, sits nearer the Atrium than any point of Spiral Beta, which is nominally its predecessor. Marrow addressed this in a marginal note now held with the survey returns:

"The letters are not a route. They are a filing order. Persons attempting to walk Alpha to Iota in sequence should be advised that the ninth is not adjacent to the eighth, and that the walk is not possible without returning to the Atrium, which is not permitted between the hours of the third and fifth watches."

— Vell Marrow, Survey Returns, Floor 9, marginal note 12

The prohibition on Atrium transit during those watches remains in force and is enforced by a single attendant, whose name is not recorded but whose chair is.

Relation to Spiral 9 and the transit conduits

Spiral Alpha through Spiral Iota should not be confused with Spiral 9, the primary vertical shaft of thirty-three landings that serves the same floor by a different geometry. The distinction is administrative rather than physical: Spiral 9 is a shaft, the nine primary spirals are radials, and both terminate in the Atrium, frequently at the same hour and to the visible irritation of the door-wardens.

Subjects arriving at Floor 9 enter by way of Spiral 9-Alpha, the dedicated transit conduit, and are distributed among the nine primary spirals according to a schedule revised each cycle. Distribution is not by the subject's nature, origin, or destination; it is by the order in which the subject completes the entry form. Spiral Epsilon, for this reason, is disproportionately occupied by the slower-walking.

Any record passing through the Seventh Aperture of the Seventh Spiral receives the Alpha designation under Concordance 707-Alpha. It is a persistent point of confusion that this does not make the record a property of Spiral Alpha, and the two offices responsible have not spoken since the dispute of the Second Recension.

Spirals and the Concordances

The nine spirals are addressed collectively in only one instrument. Concordance Iota treats them by reference, in the course of its provisions for Class administration, and its Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota extends those provisions to the spirals "insofar as they persist, which they do". The Iota Triad Dossier gathers the working papers. Annex Vii of Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota appends a table of the nine with their documented turn-counts, and the table is wrong in four places. The correction was filed separately and has not been annexed.

Concordance 7-Alpha, Clause 12 assigns to each spiral a designated Buttress of Consensus under Ordinance Theta-4, which numbers twenty-four primary buttresses Alpha through Omega, excluding Iota and Omicron. The exclusion of Iota from the buttress series has never been explained. Successive recensions of the Concordances have preserved it without comment, and the Librarians have declined three petitions to supply one.

Scholarly disagreement: the count of nine

Whether there are nine primary spirals is the oldest open question in Floor 9's literature. The Thirty-Seventh Concordance asserts ten, and names the tenth as Spiral Kappa, "adjacent to Iota and observed by two parties independently". No landing of Spiral Kappa has since been located. The Third Concordance, which is older and shorter and cited more often, insists on nine and appends a note that the tenth "has been observed to be a corridor with an ambitious name".

The dispute turns on measurement. Spiral Iota's outer turn abuts a passage that, for a stretch of some forty paces, exhibits helical curvature in the opposite direction. Those who count ten treat this passage as a spiral in its own right; those who count nine treat it as part of Iota, and note that its curvature resolves entirely within a single landing of the latter. The Corridors Alpha through Epsilon are sometimes drawn into the argument, since Spiral Delta crosses them twice, and the crossings are variously counted as junctions, intrusions, or errors of the survey. The Transfer Floors Alpha-3 through Alpha-7 are on no account involved, though they are frequently blamed.

No expedition has settled the matter. The three mounted for the purpose returned with complete inventories of the curvature and no conclusion.

The winter of the misdirected returns

In the winter following the survey of Spiral Zeta, two hundred and forty returns were filed against Spiral Alpha that belonged to Spiral Eta. The error originated in the scriptorium, where an Eta had been recopied as an Alpha by a clerk named Onn Vesp, who maintained that the letters were indistinguishable "at the speed the office requires". Vesp's grievance — that the differential ink ruled for Eta was not issued to copyists but to correctors, who no longer attended — was entered into the record and remains there, unanswered, under the heading "Pending, Floor 9".

The returns were reassigned within two cycles. The episode is remembered chiefly for the ruling it produced: that a spiral's records belong to the spiral and not to the landing, "except where the landing is the only surveyed feature, in which case the reverse obtains" (Thirty-Seventh Concordance, Annex 4). Practitioners since have preferred to cite the first half and let the exception lapse.

Inventory of the nine

The following summary is drawn from the table in Annex Vii of Addendum 9 to Concordance Iota, corrected only where the survey returns are unanimous.

  • Spiral Alpha — eleven turns, shortest; datum of the radial series.
  • Spiral Beta — nineteen turns; its first landing is below the Atrium floor.
  • Spiral Gamma — twenty-four turns; curvature disputed at three points.
  • Spiral Delta — thirty turns; crosses Corridors Alpha through Epsilon twice.
  • Spiral Epsilon — thirty-three turns; heaviest entry traffic after the third watch.
  • Spiral Zeta — thirty-six turns; site of the returns error.
  • Spiral Eta — forty-one turns; differential ink withheld.
  • Spiral Theta — fifty-eight turns; one landing sealed by The Silent Cabinet, which is not on this floor and cannot be reached from it.
  • Spiral Iota — eighty-one turns; far landing entered twice; see Aperture Alpha-7, Sub-Level 33 for the second entry.

The table carries a fourth column, headed "Persistent", in which every spiral is marked yes. The marking was made in a single hand, in one sitting, and the hand has not been identified.
