Check

MS 8438.92 · Practices and doctrines

The Check, governed by Concordance 7.4.12 and detailed in Annex G, is the formal process of procedural verification required before any subject or object is accepted for cataloguing within the Tower. A Check comprises three mandatory stages, collectively known as the Conflict Check protocol, and establishes the official Chain Sequence Number by which a subject is tracked thereafter.

Protocol Stages

The Bureau of Registry and the Bureau of Axiomatic Purity jointly mandate the Check’s three sequential stages, each of which must be performed by a certified official and recorded on a CCF-7.

First Stage: Referential Audit

Conducted within the Department of Procedural Integrity, this preliminary audit determines whether the proposed subject has been previously catalogued, even under a variant designation. The official must consult the Matriculation Ledger and the repository of provisional citations held by the Bureau of Registry. A negative finding (Subject Not Found, or SNF) permits progression to the second stage.

Second Stage: Axiomatic Compatibility Check

This critical assessment, performed within the Axiomatic Atrium under joint supervision of the Department of Procedural Integrity and the Axiomatic School, evaluates the subject's potential to introduce logical inconsistencies or ontological paradoxes into the Tower’s existing holdings. The official uses a Stethoscope of Concordance to record any subject reactions to a standardized set of foundational propositions. A subject exhibiting "axiomatic bleed" or "propositional resonance" exceeding 12 sigma requires review by the Bureau of Axiomatic Purity and may be denied entry.

Third Stage: Crossreferential Stability Check

The final and most bureaucratic stage, it is initiated by filing Form M-7b (Rev.), Section 4 with the Department of Procedural Integrity. Officials perform a concordance-check on all provisional citations associated with the subject, identifying any conflicting citations or contradictory amendments within the Concordances. Only upon receipt of a Stability Certification, signed by a Senior Archivist, is the Check considered complete, clearing the subject for Referential Consultation.

Chain Sequence Number

The successful completion of all three stages triggers the assignment of a permanent Chain Sequence Number (CSN) by the Department of Procedural Integrity. The CSN format, codified in the Manual of Ingress, is CSN-[Spiral]-[Iteration].[Variant]-[Check], where "Check" denotes the specific verification cycle. For example, CSN-Theta-422.7-3 indicates the subject was the seventh variant of the 422nd iteration in the Theta Spiral, accepted during the third Check cycle of that fiscal quarter. The CSN is then inscribed on the final Chain-of-Custody Acknowledgment.

Historical Precedent and the Closed System

The modern Check protocol is a direct consequence of the Soporific Spore Incident of I.NAD 412-87, wherein Senior Lumener Alban repeatedly performed a maintenance verification on a non-catalogued fungal colony for nineteen hours due to a lapsed CSN. This event underscored the necessity of the Closed System Principle, which holds that a subject must be fully verified before it interacts with the Tower’s administrative reality. The Check is the practical implementation of this principle.

A minority view, articulated in the dissenting footnotes to Concordance 7.4.12, argues that the Check creates the ontological stability it purports to merely verify. This school, sometimes called the Intrinsic Numerists, contends that the CSN is not an administrative label but a constitutive property of the subject itself, generated by the verification act. The view, upheld by the Bureau of Registry, rejects this as a category error, maintaining the Check is a discovery process, not a creative one.

Notable Variances

Standard Check protocol is suspended for materials originating from Floor Na, which are subject to a condensed, single-stage verification due to their inherent referential instability. Furthermore, the legendary case of Eloise of the Unspooled Chain involved a subject that passed its Axiomatic Compatibility Check but whose Crossreferential Stability Check generated an infinite regress of contradictory citations; the resulting procedural deadlock required the ad-hoc creation of Concordance 7.4.12a to resolve, thereby amending the very protocol that had identified the anomaly.

"The Check does not ask if a thing is real. The Check determines if the Tower is ready for it."
