Central Receiving Apertures
MS 6580.90 · Objects and instruments
Central Receiving Apertures are the three designated physical points within the Tower where all foundational documentation for a new subject-candidate is initially received, de-identified, and vetted to begin the Cycle of Identification. Governed by the forty-seven Ordinances of the Third Concordance (Annex: Receipt and Dissolution), they serve as the exclusive, non-replicable gateways between a petitioner's external, unverified existence and the Tower's internal, catalogued reality. Their locations—Spiral 77, Aperture Gamma; Spiral 117, Aperture Beta; and the undisclosed Spiral Omega, Aperture Alpha—are Fixed Points inscribed in the Central Registry of Fixed Points and are not subject to spatial renegotiation.
Operational Function
The primary function of a Central Receiving Aperture is to execute a clean ontological severance. Upon presentation, a petitioner's documents—collectively termed the "Petition of Being"—are passed through the Aperture's physical frame. The act of crossing this threshold triggers a dissolution of all extrinsic identifiers: names of origin, temporal coordinates of composition, and material signatures are stripped and archived in the Vault of Unbound Attributes. What emerges on the interior side is the Receiving Slate, a blank, tempered tablet upon which only the categorical essence of the proposed subject is deemed to inhere. This process is overseen by a Receiving Registrar, who holds sole Receiving Authority for that Aperture during their shift. The Registrar's duty is not to interpret the subject, but to certify the completion of the de-identification ritual as per the protocols detailed in the Seventh and Third Concordances.
Architectural and Bureaucratic Specifications
Each Aperture is architecturally identical: a freestanding archway of fitted basalt blocks, 3.33 meters high and 1.618 meters wide, devoid of ornamentation. The facing stone on the interior side is always slightly cooler to the touch, a phenomenon catalogued but never explained. Adjacent to each is a clerical bay where the tempering process for Receiving Slates is conducted. For instance, the bay at Spiral 77, Aperture Gamma also functions as a high-throughput terminus for the Central Pneumatic Stacks, handling canister-transfers, but this is considered a logistically convenient overlap rather than a functional one. The Central Registry maintains direct oversight, and all Provisional Classifications issued here are stamped with the Registry's sigil before the Slate enters the distribution system.
"The Aperture is not a door. A door implies a corridor on either side. The Aperture is a wound in causality, sutured by procedure."

The Three Designated Apertures
The operational status and traffic of the three Apertures vary significantly, as mandated by obscure clauses in the Fourth Concordance.
- Spiral 77, Aperture Gamma: The most active, primarily receiving petitions for subjects of a mechanical or systemic nature. It is administratively linked to the Central Scriptorium and handles the tempering of Slates destined for bureaucratic review.
- Spiral 117, Aperture Beta: Designated for petitions concerning organic or emergent phenomena. Its intake is lower but considered more complex, often requiring extended Viability Assessments.
- Spiral Omega, Aperture Alpha: Its physical location is redacted from all public registries. It is theorized to receive only those petitions that, by their nature, challenge the Tower's existing categorical schema, though by definition, no confirmed case exists in the open record. Its Receiving Registrar is appointed for life by a secret conclave of Senior Librarians.
Controversies and Doctrinal Disputes
The absolute necessity of the Central Apertures is a core tenet of Aperture doctrine, but it is not without challenge. The school of Aperture Purists argues that any deviation from the three Fixed Points—such as the use of Provisional Transit Apertures for emergency intake—corrupts the purity of the cataloguing process. Conversely, pragmatists within the Central Registry point to Ordinance 117-b of the Eleventh Concordance, which permits Provisional Apertures during periods of "existential backlog," a state they argue is perpetual.
A more profound schism concerns the Apertures' relationship to Recursive Apertures. Some hermeneutists argue that the Central Apertures are themselves recursive, as the act of receiving a petition about a "doorway" or "threshold" must, by logical necessity, be processed through a doorway, creating a categorical feedback loop. This is dismissed by the Registry as a metaphysical distraction from practical workflow, though the dispute has generated over fourteen hundred commentary scrolls archived in Restricted Annex 9.
Relation to Provisional and Sealed Apertures
The Central Apertures are the archetype against which all others are measured. Provisional Transit Apertures are temporary, Registry-registered openings used for bulk transfer of non-foundational materials or during Central Aperture maintenance. They lack the de-identification function. Sealed Apertures, often former Provisionals or theoretical apertures deemed non-viable, are permanently closed by an Ordinance of Closure issued by the Central Registry. The integrity of the three Central Apertures is considered inviolable; no Ordinance for their closure exists or could be drafted, as their sealing would terminate the Tower's ability to intake new reality, a paradox that itself would require cataloguing.
