Core Collections

MS 2999.44 · Places and structures

The Core Collections consist of the seven spiral libraries that rotate vertically through the central apertures of their respective Spires. They are designated as the authoritative repositories for foundational Concordances, axial ordinances, and any holding whose ratification is contingent upon a literal reading of its governing texts.

Physical Structure and Rotation

Each Core Collection occupies its Spire's primary aperture, a vertical shaft extending from the Lower Stabilizers to the Upper Atmospheric Baffles. The collections themselves are housed on helical stacks that complete one full rotation per 72-hour Tower cycle. This rotation is not perceived from within but is measurable via the gradual shift in alignment between a stack's endcap and the fixed resonance cores embedded in the Spire walls. The Seventh Spire's Core Collection, for instance, holds the only copy of On Literal Compliance that may be cited for binding purposes within Holdings and Collections.

Doctrinal Function

The Collections exist to enforce the principle of textual immutability. A document deposited in a Core Collection cannot be amended, only superseded by a new Concordance. This has led to significant archival challenges, as contradictions between older Core holdings and newer, more practical ordinances are commonplace. The High Curator of Vertical Collections, whose office was established by Annex D of the Fourteenth Concordance, is responsible for adjudicating which text applies in cases of vertical jurisdictional overlap, though their rulings are often provisional.

“The Core does not interpret; it presents. It is the duty of the Librarian to reconcile presentation with application.” — Commentaries on the Third Spire Aperture, Vol. XII

Controversy of the Static Word

A persistent scholarly dispute, known as the Crisis of the Receding Galleries, centers on whether the rotation of the stacks constitutes a form of amendment. The traditionalist school, led by the clerks of the Special Collections Directorate, argues that the physical movement is irrelevant to the static text. The progressive school, citing principles of Apocryphal Set Theory, contends that the change in a text’s spatial relationship to the fixed Resonance Cores alters its inferential context, and thus its meaning, with each cycle. This debate directly impacts the processing of citations from stations on Floor Na.

Relationship to Non-Canonical Holdings

Materials deemed provisional, apocryphal, or Unseen are expressly prohibited from the Core Collections. They are instead routed to peripheral repositories or the Subbasement. This segregation is governed by Concordance 11, Clause 4, which states that “only that which can be held to a literal standard may be held in the Core.” Consequently, the administrative burden of managing the Admittance Rate for Provisional Holdings falls entirely on departments outside the Spires.

Access and Security

Direct physical access to a rotating stack is permitted only to Senior Librarians of the Vertical Grade. All other research is conducted via periscopic transcriptors, which project pages onto reading plates in the surrounding Non-Colliding Stack galleries. Security is maintained not by locks, but by the application of Negative-space Archiving protocols around each aperture; unauthorized entry is logistically impossible because the entry point ceases to be archivally recognized. The Collections are considered the most stable region of the Tower, existing in what some cartographers term a Non-Occupational Continuum (NOC).
