Archive Reckoning

MS 9627.60 · Practices and doctrines

Archive Reckoning is the primary calendrical and temporal indexing system employed within The Tower. It serves as the definitive framework for dating events, cataloguing acquisitions, and sequencing administrative actions across all documented floors. The system is maintained by the Department of Paradoxical Reckoning under the authority of the Forty-Eighth Concordance, Annex B, though its operational protocols are largely derived from precedents set in the Vellum of Perpetual Reckoning.

Origins and Founding Principles

The inception of Archive Reckoning is formally dated to Tower Reckoning Year 1, which is itself defined as the year the First Linen Accord was ratified. This creates a foundational tautology acknowledged in all introductory treatises: the system begins from a point it itself defines. The core principle, as stated in the Manual of Sequential Inertia, is that "time is a filing system." Years are not conceived as durations but as indexed units, akin to shelves or folios, into which events are placed.

Each year is designated by a sequential number (e.g., Archive Reckoning 4,112) followed, in official documents, by a descriptive epithet (e.g., "the Year of the Silent Bell"). The assignment of epithets is governed by the Guild of Perpetual Reckoning, which nominates a title based on the first significant event or non-event of that year, as recorded in the Procurement Ledger Delta-9 or its equivalents.

Structural Implementation

The year is divided into twelve months of unequal length, named after administrative states: Hesychast, Quiescent, Latent, Dormant, Pendent, Interim, Provisional, Speculative, Anticipatory, Resonant, Echoic, and Terminal. There is no consistent correlation between month length and seasonal cycles, as such cycles are not universally acknowledged across the Tower's floors.

Days are not numbered within months. Instead, events are dated by their proximity to the most recent "reckoning event," such as an Annual Reckoning or a Reckoning of Intent. A typical date reads: "the 17th of Hesychast, 412 (Archive Reckoning)," with the year in parentheses.

Notable Reckoning Events

Certain years are designated by events that redefine the reckoning process itself. These create nested or parallel systems, often leading to bureaucratic schisms.

Disputes and Anomalies

Archive Reckoning is not monolithic. Competing systems frequently arise, such as the Arboreal Reckoning, which measures time by the perceived growth of the Theoretical Central Sap-Well. Furthermore, the Department of Paradoxical Reckoning recognizes, but does not reconcile, the existence of "zero-year events." For instance, Specimen S-12 was accessioned in "Year 744 of the Archive (Post-Fourth Concordance Reckoning)," implying a separate epoch that overwrites the primary sequence for specific document clusters.

A significant ongoing debate, per Clause 14 of the Forty-Eighth Concordance, concerns whether the reckoning counts years that have been administratively redacted. The "Lost Interval" between Year of the Silent Pen 412 and Year of the Silent Ledger 14,022 is cited by some scholars as evidence of at least 13,610 unnumbered years, while the orthodox position holds that the numbering is continuous and any perceived gap is a filing error.

Modern Application

Today, all accession records, personnel rotations, and even culinary menus in the refectories are dated using Archive Reckoning. Its resilience is attributed to its embedded paradoxes; as the Addendum to the Vellum of Perpetual Reckoning notes, "A system that can date its own failure (e.g., 'the Year of the Silent Clock 441') is a system that cannot be disproven." It remains the immutable, if occasionally incomprehensible, backbone of the Tower's temporal order.
