Plinth of the First Doubt
MS 2816.50 · Objects and instruments
The Plinth of the First Doubt (Catalog Designation 712.α.1) is a foundational basalt monolith located in the Hall of Inception on Floor 712: The Repository of Measured Doubt. It is formally defined as the physical instantiation of the first recorded instance of archival uncertainty, and serves as the primary datum for all subsequent measurements of ontological instability within the Tower.
Physical Description and Inscription
The plinth is a rectangular column of unpolished basalt, measuring 2.13 meters in height, 0.91 meters in width, and 0.91 meters in depth. Its surface is marked by a single, worn inscription in High Archival Script. The inscription reads: "Is it catalogued because it exists, or does it exist because it is catalogued?" This epigram is bisected vertically by the shadow of the central spire of the Hall during the phenomenon known as Kairologos, a daily event lasting 4 minutes and 33 seconds when the primary verification lumens are temporarily occluded. The Plinth Report for Cycle 8192 notes that the shadow's edge has eroded the central glyph of "exists" by approximately 0.2 millimeters, a fact cited in several disputes regarding material decay of conceptual anchors.
Provenance and First Doubt
The plinth's origin is contemporaneous with the founding of the First Librarianate. According to Annex Delta of the First Concordance, the doubt was formally raised by First Reader Valen during the initial cataloguing of a self-referential treatise on non-Euclidean shelving. The moment of doubt was deemed significant enough to warrant physical commemoration. The basalt was quarried from the Vault of Unwritten Prefaces and inscribed under the auspices of the Mason of the Silent Edict, though this is contested by the Forty-First Concordance, which attributes the work to an unnamed Fact-Reaffirmer using a stylus made from a Doubt-Ash branch.
Metrological Function
The Plinth of the First Doubt is not merely commemorative; it is a critical instrument. The First Spire Delineation Protocols establish it as the zero-point for the "Doubt Gradient," a measurable field of probabilistic reality that permeates the Tower. All Verification Plinths are calibrated against the shadow-bisected inscription. The Guild of Expeditionary Cartographers, whose Guild Seat is on the same floor, uses the plinth to anchor their MAP coordinates. The paper for physical copies of the MAP is itself manufactured from pulped Doubt-Ash leaves, creating a closed ontological loop referenced in Concordance 712, Clause 19.
Administrative and Ritual Significance
Any new Declaration proposed for inscription must first be presented before the Plinth of the First Doubt during Kairologos. If the declaration's shadow aligns with or contradicts the plinth's inherent shadow, the proposal is either fast-tracked or sent for extensive review, respectively. The Bureau of Elevated Archives, headquartered on the Administrative Plinth, maintains a permanent observation post nearby. Furthermore, the Declaration 12 (The Edict of Silent Pages) was ritually inscribed onto its own Declaration Plinth only after the lead scribe spent a full cycle in meditation before the Plinth of the First Doubt.
Scholarly Disputes
The nature of the "First Doubt" itself remains a subject of contention. The traditionalist school, following the First Concordance, holds that the doubt concerned the ontological status of a specific treatise. The revisionist school, citing marginalia in the Forty-First Concordance, argues that the "First Doubt" was a meta-doubt about the entire enterprise of the Tower, and that the inscription is therefore a later, simplified representation. A third, radical faction within the Expeditionary Cartographers' Guild posits that the plinth is not the origin point of doubt, but rather a sink or drain for it, and that the erosion of the inscription is evidence of this constant flux. This theory is generally dismissed by the Bureau of Elevated Archives, though it has never been formally proscribed.
Related Artifacts and Phenomena
The plinth is often discussed in conjunction with the Plinth of the First Whisper, which marks the resonance point of the Zone of Calcified Echoes, and the Plinth Reports that document the integrity of primary transit shafts. Its physical and conceptual stability is considered a prerequisite for the function of the Vellum of Perpetual Claritude. All are considered subsidiary, in an archival sense, to the foundational uncertainty embodied by the Plinth of the First Doubt.
