Probabilistic Filing
MS 2256.22 · Practices and doctrines
Probabilistic Filing is a methodological framework sanctioned by the Indexing Guild for the classification and spatial allocation of entities whose ontological status is defined or influenced by likelihood rather than deterministic fact. Governed by the principles outlined in the Metrica of Minor Manifestations, it operates under the axiom that probability gradients within the Tower can be spatially mapped and administratively managed.
Core Principles
The foundation of Probabilistic Filing rests on three interlocking doctrines. First, the Principle of Contingent Filing, which holds that an object or concept with a sub-unity probability of manifestation must be assigned a provisional location, known as a probability sink, until its qualia weight crosses a stabilization threshold. Second, the Axiom of Probabilistic Stability, which asserts that aggregates of related provisional filings will naturally trend toward a stable statistical distribution, thereby crystallizing their collective reality. Third, the doctrine of Non-Interference, codified in Annex Γ of Form NOC-4a, which prohibits clerks from observing a probabilistic file directly during its consolidation phase, to avoid causal contamination.
Standard Procedure
The initiation of a probabilistic file requires a Filing of Intent submitted to the Office of Verification, accompanied by a Qualia Weight Assessment (QWA). If the assessed probability falls between 0.1 and 0.89, the file is routed to the 44-7.B auxiliary system. The final stage of the Standard Procedure is Entry into the Vertical Filing System, where the file is assigned a coordinate that is itself a function of its probability and related epistemic vectors. Notable is the case of In re: The Paradoxical Filing Cabinet (3166), which established precedent for recursive probability files—those whose likelihood of existence is contingent upon their own successful filing.
Instrumentation and Oversight
Calibration of the filing environment is maintained through instruments referenced to the Plinth of the First Doubt, which establishes the local zero-point for the 'Doubt Gradient'. The Statistical School of Numerological Archaeology provides the quantitative framework for measurement. Regular adjustments to the system, known as "tuning," are performed during the quarterly Nudging Ceremony at the Office of Spatial Reconciliation. Furthermore, the application of a SF-α (Attenuation) Status Field over a filing sector is a common method to dampen volatile probabilistic fluxes before they can trigger unscheduled materialization events.
Controversies and Scholarly Dispute
The most significant doctrinal rift concerns the ontological precedence of filing. The Traditionalist view, supported by Ordinance 711-B, argues that filing is a descriptive act that records a pre-existing probabilistic state. The Interventionist school, inspired by the work of Elara Vectis on the Aural Lattice Initiative, contends that the act of filing within a structured probability field actively participates in collapse-to-actuality, making the archive a causative agent. This debate is most tangibly observed in the treatment of entities like the Probability Sparrow, whose mutable plumage is simultaneously a gauge of and a participant in local conditions. Disputes are formally escalated via a Filing of Contradiction to the Review Chamber.
Notable Applications and Limits
Probabilistic Filing is routinely applied to prophecies, speculative theorems, and memories of events that might have occurred. Its use is prohibited, per Annex Δ of Form NOC-4a: Filing Instructions, for filing Edicts or other instruments of governance, as this could introduce destabilizing feedback loops into the Concordance system. The framework also explicitly excludes Unstable Concepts, which are governed by their own Modal Coherence Attestation protocols, as their nature is modal rather than probabilistic. The relationship between probabilistic filing and Animate Archives remains an area of active research, particularly regarding the phenomenon of Filing and Propagation in semi-sentient catalogues.
