Guild of Perpetual Reckoning

MS 9376.25 · Guilds, orders and offices

Guild of Perpetual Reckoning was a chartered administrative unit responsible for the supervision and physical execution of Vertical Reckoning protocols from its establishment in the Late Spiral Period until its formal dissolution and subsequent reclassification to Type 2: Perpetual Pending status in Annual Reckoning 7,304. Its operational budget remains sequestered within the Vault of Unfinalized Sums under Class Γ (Annex C, clause 12).

Operational Mandate

The Guild's primary mandate, as defined by the now-superseded Third Concordance, was the "material realization of celestial arithmetic," a charge interpreted as the calculation and physical inscription of all primary data related to the Tower's vertical metrics. This required Guild Scribes to undertake periodic ascents and descents to verify floor-count tallies and catalog positional anomalies. All such primary data was required by ordinance to be inscribed exclusively on Vellum of Perpetual Reckoning, a specific material prepared by the Tannery of the Seventh Sigh using a lixiviation process involving calcified spire-moss. The Sigil of Perpetual Custody was required to be affixed to any completed folio before it could be entered into the archival record.

Structure and Departments

At its operational peak, the Guild comprised three semi-autonomous departments, a structure that later contributed to its administrative fragmentation:

This tripartite structure is criticized in the Manual of Perpetual Deferral (Appendix Ξ) as "an engine for generating complementary yet irreconcilable datasets."

Dissolution and Post-Operational Status

The Guild was formally dissolved by the Memorandum Delta12 Ge to Gtm, which cited "chronic procedural recursion" and the "existential burden of maintaining a reckoning for which no final sum can be, or should be, derived." Its assets, including its reserve of vellum and specialized climbing apparatus, were placed under the custodianship of the Clerk of Perpetual Pending. However, its budgetary allocation was never formally rescinded, leading to its unique classification. The Peripheral Auditors Guild, in its charter document (Year 12,341 of the Spiral Reckoning), references the Guild of Perpetual Reckoning as a "precedent for infinite fiscal suspension."

Subsequent responsibilities for vertical measurement were distributed among several successor bodies, including the Guild of Fundamental Mechanics, which was contracted for lift maintenance during Annual Reckoning 892, and the Guild of Horologists, which jointly administers the Manual of Cyclical Reckoning.

Scholarly Disputes

The principal academic controversy surrounding the Guild concerns the interpretation of the Memorandum Delta3, which appears to contradict the dissolution order. Some archivists, notably those aligned with the Chandlers' Guild school of thought, argue that Delta3 implicitly reinstates the Guild's mandate for "extra-spiral reckonings," a poorly defined category. This faction holds that the Guild persists in a latent, incorporeal form, its function absorbed into the Tower's infrastructure itself. The prevailing counter-interpretation, endorsed by the Office of Perpetual Affairs, maintains that Delta3 refers purely to the archival treatment of the Guild's own historical records and has no bearing on its operational status. This disagreement is a standard test case in procedural hermeneutics.

Material Legacy

The Guild's most tangible legacy is the corpus of inscribed vellum stored across several sub-basements of the Mid-Spiral Stacks. These folios are notable for their precise, if often contradictory, measurements and their distinctive wax seals. The Guild of Casket-Wrights retains the sole licensed pattern for constructing storage casks for these records, as specified in the original guild charter. Physical interaction with any folio still requires the application of a replica Sigil of Perpetual Custody, a practice maintained by tradition long after the Guild's active disbandment.
