Wick Fibre

MS 7915.45 · Objects and instruments

Wick-fibre is a class of regulated combustible textile material, cultivated exclusively within the designated Harvest-Spires of the Tower, and over which the Lampwrights’ Guild holds a complete monopoly for procurement and distribution, as codified by the First Edict of Lamps. Its primary function is the conveyance and regulation of fuel (Oil, tallow, or Resonant Argonium) for both permanent and ephemeral light sources. The physical and metaphysical properties of wick-fibre are a subject of significant administrative and philumological scrutiny.

Physical Characteristics & Varieties

Wick-fibre manifests in three sanctioned grades, each defined by its luminous coefficient and capillary resonance. Prime-Grade fibre, often referred to as "Lumin-thread," exhibits a characteristic bioluminescent sheen prior to ignition and is reserved for central spire beacons and ceremonial tapers. Standard-Grade fibre, the most common variant, possesses a uniform grey-bistre hue and is used in the majority of administrative lamps and corridor sconces. Dross-Grade fibre, identifiable by its uneven, matted texture, is allocated for temporary work-lights and emergency candle-stocks.

All grades are distinguished by their unique braiding pattern, mandated by Annex 7 of the Forty-First Concordance, which specifies a helical twist of no fewer than twelve and no more than fourteen turns per standardized hand-length. This specification is critical, as deviations exceeding one turn are correlated with irregular flame-dance and have been implicated in seventeen documented incidents of Visual Resonance Feedback, as logged by the Office of Visual Resonance.

The Harvest Cycle

Wick-fibre is not mined or woven in a conventional sense, but is harvested from the Silica-Canebrakes that flourish in the artificial twilight of Harvest-Spires 47, 112, and 909. The Procurement Cycle is a triennial event, synchronized with the dimming of the Spire’s central lumens. During the Harvest, licensed Reapers, under the supervision of the Keeper of the Wick, cut the mature canes at a precise angle of 5.7 degrees from the vertical, a practice allegedly derived from the angle of the First Taper’s original flame. The raw fibre is then cured in chambers suffused with argon-sublimate for no less than forty days before being transported under guard to the central Wickery for grading and allotment.

Regulation & The Edicts

The control of wick-fibre is one of the four critical material streams monopolized by the Lampwrights' Guild under the First Edict of Lamps. This monopoly extends beyond simple commerce to encompass cultivation protocols, quality arbitration, and the issuance of trimming licenses. The Guild of Lamplighters and Wick-Trimmers employs licensed custodians, known as Wick Trimmers, whose right to handle and trim active wicks is contingent upon their possession of a valid Wick-Endorsement token, issued per the process outlined in Annex Omega of Concordancetwelfth.

Unauthorized possession, cultivation, or braiding of wick-fibre constitutes a Breach of Concordance, typically adjudicated under the Edict of Singular Provenance. Penalties range from re-assignment to a non-illuminated storage annex to permanent suspension of all lumen-access privileges.

The Philumological Controversy

A persistent and largely unresolved debate, often termed the Philumological Controversy, concerns the fundamental nature of wick-fibre. One school of thought, championed by the Lampwrights' Guild, holds that the fibre is a passive conduit, its properties defined solely by its physical structure and the fuel it carries. The opposing view, advanced by certain factions within the Office of Visual Resonance, posits that wick-fibre possesses a latent "narrative capacity"—that it records, in its consumption, the events illuminated by its flame. This theory cites the anomalous case of the Candle from Floor 1117, whose exhausted wick, when examined under a cryptoscope, appeared to contain micro-engravings depicting the signing of the First Concordance, an event which predated the candle's manufacture by several centuries.

"The wick does not merely burn; it translates fuel into light, and light, in this Tower, is the first draft of record." – Archivist-Proctor Linus, during the Proceedings of the Crisis of the Countermanded Edict

Standardized Measurements & The Delta Implement

The definitive measurement of a wick's "life" or permissible burn-length is governed by the First Spire Delineation Protocols and performed using the Delta Implement. A standard serviceable wick-length is defined as the span between the tip of the flame and the point where the Delta Implement, when suspended, first obscures the light-source from a sanctioned observer positioned at a distance of one precise pace. Trims are required when this length deviates by more than 10% from the established standard for the lamp-type in question. Meticulous logs of these measurements and trims are kept by the Candlelight Watch and submitted to the Office of Visual Resonance for audit.
