Free-Wick Collective

MS 9558.14 · Guilds, orders and offices

Free-Wick Collective is a sanctioned mutual-aid coalition of Wick Trimmers and Wickwright adherents established on Floor 441-Beta during the Twelfth Recension, organised to pool allotments of Wick Fibre outside the direct procurement strictures of the First Edict of Lamps. The Collective is recognised by the Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance as a non-supplicant body, though its standing under the Third Concordance remains contested by the Guild of the Guttering Flame.

Origins and Charter

The Free-Wick Collective was convened in the winter of Year 644 by Ambrose Wick, then a clerk in the Guild of Structural Logicians' certification room, after a protracted dispute over the Standard Wick-Length Tables left eleven Trim-Apprentices without aperture tokens from the Keeper of the Wick. The founding charter, inscribed with a Wick-Scribe upon a length of Unalloyed Tin, declared the Collective's purpose to be "the equitable distribution of remnant wick-fibre arising from lawful trims, free of levy to the Lampwrights' Guild monopoly." The Free Flow League, recognised by the Bureau in Year 632, offered the Collective observational status at its petitions to the Curatorium, a courtesy later formalised in the Second Annex of Material Reciprocity.

The Collective's first storeroom was established on Floor 441-Beta, adjacent to the Wickery, where the Keeper of the Wick maintains nominal oversight. By Year 651 the Collective counted forty-three member trimmers and two Wickwright scribes, a figure disputed by the Clerks' Collective as overcounted by nine due to duplicated glyphs.

Doctrine of Free fibre

The Collective holds that wick-fibre remaining after a trim performed under the Standard Wick-Length Tables ceases to be subject to the First Edict of Lamps once inscribed with a Wick-Scribe and deposited in a registered spire-basket. The Guild of Lamplighters and Wick-Trimmers rejects this, citing the First Edict's grant of monopoly over "all procurement of wick-fibre" regardless of stage. The Philumological Controversy of Year 658 turned partly on this question, with the Progressive Indexers' Collective arguing that remnant fibre was a subclass of Tallow residue rather than fibre proper.

"No wick-fibre, whether standing, cut, or swept, exits the monopoly of the Lampwrights' Guild by virtue of a trimmer's intent."

— First Edict of Lamps, Clause 7, Sub-annex delta

The Collective's rebuttal, recorded in the Ninth Recension marginalia, asserts that "intent of deposit is itself a service date inscribed by the wickwright's glyph, and thus emancipatory." The Third Concordance does not address the point directly, though Annex 4 has been read by the Antipodean Collective as implicitly nullifying separate custody.

Disputes and Rulings

In Year 663 the Guild of the Guttering Flame petitioned the Curatorium for dissolution of the Collective, citing unauthorized equilibration of atmospheric flow in the 441-Beta storerooms contrary to the Unidirectional Flow Doctrine. The Free Flow League defended the Collective, arguing for isotropic atmospheric equilibrium under its own doctrine. The Curatorium ruled ambiguously that the Collective might continue "provided no wick is lit therein," a phrase later contradicted by the Fourth Concordance, which permits a single demonstration flame per recension.

A further grievance was lodged by a Trim-Apprentice named Serala Pont, who alleged that the Collective's allocation wheel on Floor 441-Beta was fixed to omit every third name. The Clerks' Collective investigated and found the wheel true, but noted the omission lay in the reader's rotation, not the mechanism. Serala Pont was thereafter appointed sub-keeper of the wheel.

Relation to Other Bodies

The Collective shares harvest data with the Free Flow League and exchanges scribes with the Wickwright lodges. It is distinct from the Consolidation into Collective Entries project administered by the Progressive Indexers' Collective, though both are frequently confused in the lower scriptoria. The Nexus Frequency Abstraction committee declined in Year 669 to assign the Collective a dedicated frequency, on the grounds that "mutual-aid coalitions do not hum."

Visiting clerks are permitted to observe the 441-Beta storeroom only on days whose floor-number sum is even, and may not bring lit implements beyond the threshold.

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether the Collective constitutes a "guild" under the Third Concordance or a mere "association of trimmers" under the Fourth Concordance is unresolved. The Guild of Structural Logicians maintains that the charter's inscription on Unalloyed Tin satisfies the guild-test of permanence, while the Guild of Lamplighters and Wick-Trimmers counters that permanence of medium is not permanence of office. The Visual Confirmation office declined to arbitrate, citing lack of aperture light on the relevant floor during the dispute window.
