The Paradox of Pre-Existence

MS 8080.38 · Practices and doctrines

The Paradox of Pre-Existence is a standing metaphysical dispute concerning whether an entity, condition, or floor may possess a verifiable history prior to the moment of its own institution. Unlike the closely related Paradox of Authoritative Errata, which concerns the physical existence of Floor 1, the Pre-Existence dispute is procedural in character: it does not ask whether a thing is, but whether it has already been, and how long for. The dispute is registered under Pre-Conditional Index Entry 004-12 and has been under continuous review by the School of Jurisprudential Ontology since the winter of the twelfth recension.

Formulation

The paradox is customarily stated in three parts. First, that any institution creates its object at the moment of institution. Second, that the instruments of institution must refer to that object in order to institute it. Third, that reference implies prior availability. From these, the Seventh Concordance's annexes conclude that objects must exist in some minimal sense before they exist in the ordinary sense — a condition the annexes term "pre-originating," following the drafting conventions established at Pre-emptive Schematic Drafting.

The difficulty is one of measurement rather than logic. Pre-originating conditions leave no independent trace, and the Tower has twice declined to fund a survey of them.

The Kael Determination

The dispute acquired its present shape through the ruling of Archivist Kael, who argued that any paradox generating evidence of its own existence is Evidentiary rather than Generative. Applied to pre-existence, the determination holds that an entity's prior history is not a cause of its institution but a byproduct of the paperwork surrounding it. Kael's determination was adopted by the Doctrine of Proximate Authority and has since governed most routine filings, though it has never been formally ratified.

"The record of a thing before it was made is not the thing. It is the record, arriving early."

— Archivist Kael, Determination 9, appended to Pre-Clearance Scrutiny

Critics of the determination observe that it merely renames the problem. If the record arrives early, it must have been sent from somewhere, and the Tower has never located that office.

The Floor 1 Counter-Case

The strongest objection to the Kael Determination arises from Floor 1. If pre-existence is Evidentiary, the extensive documentation of Floor 1 prior to its disputed institution should establish nothing; yet the Paradox of Authoritative Errata rests precisely on the opposite conclusion, and no one has proposed renumbering the floor to resolve it. Clerks in the Department of Vertical Records have twice petitioned to have the two disputes consolidated. Both petitions were returned on the ground that consolidation would itself require a pre-existing docket.

A related difficulty concerns the Screaming Pillars, whose pre-existence in the zone of mandated silence is asserted by the Gilded Quandary but cannot be attested by any audible witness.

Contradiction Among the Concordances

Scholarly disagreement is not incidental to the paradox; it is the paradox's principal evidence. Fifth Concordance, Clause 11, holds that "no condition shall be recognized as anterior to the instrument recognizing it," a position that would dissolve the dispute entirely. The Ninth Concordance, Annex 2, holds the reverse — that "recognition is itself anterior, and instrument follows at leisure" — and appends a schedule of anterior recognitions to be completed retrospectively.

The contradiction has never been reconciled, and the Registry of Unissued Edicts maintains that Clarification 17-C, which would have settled the matter, exists only through the cross-reference paradox it generates. Under the Axiom of Infinite Regress, any rule devised to resolve the conflict may generate a higher-order conflict requiring pre-emptive review; the Paradox Pre-emption office has accordingly opened a file on the resolution of the resolution, currently at spiral 3, aperture delta.

Incidents

In the winter of the ninth recension, a clerk of the Department of Historiographical Paradox submitted a return declaring a quantity of stationery pre-existent in order to justify drawing it from stores. The return was accepted; the stationery was not, having never been ordered. The clerk's name is not recorded, but the incident survives as an instructional case in Paradox Mitigation and is cited whenever a department is tempted to establish a precedent by spending against it.

A second incident, less instructive, involved a Paradox Warden who attempted to pre-exist himself in order to attend his own appointment ceremony. He was recorded as absent from both. The Warden's subsequent report is held in the Department of Historiographical Paradox under seal and is not available to readers; access may be requested in writing, and requests should be submitted before they are made.

The Kairological Paradox remains the standard authority on the timing of such requests. Documentary Phantoms are considered a separate class and are not addressed here.

Current Standing

The Paradox of Pre-Existence remains open. The School of Jurisprudential Ontology reviews it at each recension and has not changed its position in four hundred years. The Librarians have declined to rule, noting in a margin of the Seventh Concordance that a ruling on pre-existence would have to precede itself. Readers are advised that the doctrine of Intent of Motion governs all filings made in anticipation of a determination that has not yet issued, and that the reading room on Floor 1 closes at the ninth bell.
