Dialectical Review Board

MS 8653.31 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Dialectical Review Board (DRB) is the standing committee responsible for adjudicating disputes concerning the metaphysical coherence of catalogued subjects within the Tower, as established by Third Concordance, Annex 7, Clause 12. It operates from a permanent chamber on Floor 742 (The Hall of Unresolved Premises) and maintains procedural authority parallel to, but distinct from, the Board of Concordant Arbitration and the Board of Equitable Review. Its primary function is to determine whether a catalogued subject's internal logic violates Tower-integrity, a condition defined as "the sustainable non-contradiction of archival space."

The Board's verdicts, known as Resolutions of Coherence, are binding for cataloguing purposes and are filed in the Seventh Annex of Dialectical Tension. A finding of "incoherence" does not mandate de-accessioning but triggers a mandatory review by the Curatorial Board for potential reclassification or the imposition of containment protocols.

Jurisdiction and Scope

The DRB's mandate, per Concordance 712, Article 3, extends to any holding that exhibits one or more of the following conditions: Logical Recursion (a subject that defines itself in terms of its own non-existence), Ontological Parasitism (a subject that requires the continuous existence of another, logically prior subject which has been catalogued as non-existent), and Predictive Paradox (a subject whose described properties would prevent its own cataloguing). The Board does not assess aesthetic value, historical significance, or resource allocation—these fall under the purview of the Materials Board and the Board of Equitable Review, respectively.

Notably, the DRB claims jurisdiction over all "self-referential apertures," a classification contested by the Central Review Board. This ongoing dispute is detailed in the Compendium of Overlapping Authorities, Volume IV.

Composition and Procedure

The Board comprises seven Senior Dialecticians, appointed for life terms from the ranks of the Dialectical Archivists. Each member must have previously authored a dissertation certified by the Board of Concordant Interpretation. Proceedings are initiated by petition from a Curator, a Librarian of Record, or, in rare cases, by a majority vote of the Advisory Board. The subject of review is placed under "dialectical quarantine" for the duration, meaning its physical location is sealed and all cross-references to it are temporarily suspended in the Master Index.

The review itself is a formalized debate following the Socratic-Mendelian format outlined in Concordance 841. The petitioner and a designated Defender of Coherence (typically the subject's curator) present structured arguments, after which the Board deliberates in closed session. A majority vote (5 of 7) is required for a Resolution. Dissenting opinions are archived alongside the majority resolution in the Seventh Annex.

Notable Resolutions

Resolution 742.8 (The Paradox of Unread Volumes)
Concerning a library wing on Floor 900 that contained books which could only be read if one had already memorized their contents. The DRB ruled this constituted a mild Predictive Paradox but was sustainably contained by the wing's own rules, requiring no active intervention.
Resolution 801.3 (The Ephemeral Staircase)
Pertaining to a staircase that appeared only when one was not looking for it. The Board found this to be a category error (a misapplication of observational taxonomy) rather than a true incoherence, transferring the case to the Nomenclature Board for reclassification.
Resolution 919.1 (The Sentient Catalog)
The most famous case, involving a catalog that began generating entries for itself. The DRB declared a state of Critical Logical Recursion and mandated the creation of the Dialectical Containment Bureau to manage the subject, establishing a precedent for active containment protocols.

Inter-Board Relations and Controversies

The DRB's authority frequently intersects and conflicts with other regulatory bodies. Its assertion of primacy over "conceptual resource disputes" has been challenged by the Board of Equitable Review, which argues that any allocation of archival space, even for paradoxical entities, falls under equitable apportionment. A series of counter-petitions between the two bodies concerning the "All-Consuming Font" on Floor 307 remains unresolved, with each board having issued contradictory binding resolutions.

Furthermore, the Gamma Review Board disputes the DRB's handling of Sub-Class Theta-Gamma instruments, which possess deferred temporal properties. The Gamma Board asserts that the temporal deferral aspect places ultimate jurisdiction under Gamma purview, a claim the DRB rejects on the grounds that paradox is paradox, regardless of when it manifests.

Scholarly Disagreement

The central doctrinal conflict surrounding the DRB concerns the nature of its rulings. The Intentionalist School, aligned with the Office of Concordant Interpretation, holds that a Resolution of Coherence changes the metaphysical status of the subject, bringing it into alignment with Tower-integrity. The Records-Based School, predominant among the Dialectical Archivists, argues that the Board merely discovers and documents a pre-existing state of coherence or incoherence; the act of review is observational, not transformative. This debate impacts everything from appeal procedures to the archival weight given to past Resolutions, and is a staple of advanced meta-archival seminars.
