The Dialectical School

MS 4518.43 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Dialectical School is the informal collective name for the seven working fellowships of the Dialectical Archivists that maintain the Tower's procedures of formal contradiction, together with their attached copyists, seal-bearers, and stair-clerks. It is not a governed body, has no charter, and appears in no register of offices; it is nonetheless cited in forty-one Concordances, and the failure to name it in a forty-second is the subject of a dispute now in its tenth decade. The School's ordinary work is the recording, filing, and occasional arbitration of propositions that cannot both be true and cannot both be dismissed.

Composition and seat

The School occupies the eastern bays of the Seventh Annex of Dialectical Tension, an arrangement devised by Bureau Provision 12-C after the Dialectical Containment Bureau objected that dialecticians were filing in corridors under its seal. Each fellowship holds a bay, a stair-head, and a dispute ledger. Fellowships are distinguished by the colour of their ledger bindings, a convention that has never been formally adopted and therefore cannot be rescinded.

Appointment to a fellowship is by examination held twice yearly on the Landing of Consistent Return. The examination consists of a single question in two incompatible parts; candidates who answer both parts are failed for incoherence, and candidates who answer neither are failed for silence. The pass rate is not recorded, on the grounds that a recorded pass rate would itself constitute a proposition capable of contradiction.

Method

The School's method is procedural rather than evidential. A proposition submitted for dialectical treatment is entered in the ledger opposite its negation, and the two are permitted to remain adjacent until a Resolution of Coherence is issued by the Dialectical Review Board. Fellows do not determine which proposition is true; they determine only which may be said aloud on the landing. This distinction was upheld in Resolution of Coherence 2-114, which held that "the fellows are not judges of the true, but keepers of the sayable" (Resolution of Coherence 2-114, cl. 3).

The practice of placing proposition and negation in the same hand, known as Containment Lamination, was developed in the School and later contested by the Dialectical Containment Bureau, which prefers physical sealing. A sealed proposition, the Bureau argues, cannot contradict anything. The School's reply — that a sealed proposition contradicts the seal — has been reproduced in the margins of the Bureau's own manuals since 12-C was amended.

The Schism of the North Stair

In the winter of the year recorded as 8-441, the fellowships divided over whether a contradiction could be filed twice. The Archive of Superseded Positions held that a duplicate filing was a new position; the School's Second Fellowship held that it was the same position filed again. Neither side yielded, and for eleven months two ledgers were kept at the north stair, each copying the other and each denying the other's authority.

The matter was resolved by the exhaustion of the copyists rather than by argument. The compromise, drafted by Senior Dialectician Vell Ardo, provided that a contradiction might be filed twice if the second filing were entered by a different hand. Ardo's marginal note, preserved in the Annex, reads: "The hand is the doctrine" (Ardo, marginalia to the North Stair Compromise, f. 9v). The rule persists and is the reason all fellows write with their own pens.

Relations with the Bureau

The School's jurisdiction is contested at nearly every point where it touches containment. The Pol-Vek Contradiction remains the clearest case: filed by the School, sealed by the Dialectical Containment Bureau, and housed in the Annex under an arrangement neither body will describe as settled. The Dialectical Review Board has heard the dispute four times and on each occasion declined to rule, noting that a ruling would create a precedent, and that a precedent is a proposition capable of contradiction.

Relations improved briefly during the Reclassification of Negated Nuggets, when the School and the Bureau jointly opposed the object's reclassification as heraldic. The alliance dissolved upon the question of who had opposed it first.

Criticism and the Schools dispute

Scholars of the Ontological School have argued that the Dialectical School does not study contradiction but merely stores it, and that its procedures are a species of shelving. The Foundationalist School objects from the other direction, holding that no proposition may be filed until its ground is established, a position the Dialectical School has never answered except by filing it.

The Progressive Cartography School has proposed that the seven fellowships be mapped by floor, and the School of Accumulated Intent has countered that the School has no floor, only a habit of returning to the same landing. The disagreement turns on Floor 880: The Arguing Stacks, where the School maintains a reading room of uncertain ownership.

Inventory

The School's holdings at the eastern bays are recorded as follows:

  • Seven dispute ledgers, bound in the fellowship colours, of which two are the same colour by error.
  • A complete recension of the Archive of Superseded Positions to the year 8-502, uncollated.
  • One hundred and six pens, issued individually.
  • The North Stair Compromise, in draft and fair copy.
  • A box of seals described in the ledger as "for the Bureau, if asked."

Visitors to the eastern bays must leave their own pens at the stair-head. The rule is posted, unsigned, and enforced.
