Surveyor-Prime Althea
MS 5604.20 · Persons
Appointment and Rank
Althea’s elevation to Surveyor-Prime was formalized by Librarian Edict 77-Δ, dated the 12th day of Gustfall, Tower Year 8897. The appointment followed the controversial decommissioning of Surveyor-Prime Corvus, whose maps of the Grand Atrium’s western galleries were found to contain “conceptual tautologies.” Clause 42 of the Fourteenth Concordance explicitly grants the rank, but Althea’s investiture was the first to invoke its subsidiary Clause 42(a), which permits appointment “in absentia of a suitable predecessor archive.” This set a precedent for seven subsequent Surveyor-Prime appointments.
Contributions to Cartographic Doctrine
Althea’s primary contribution was the formalization of the observational log. Prior to her work, surveyors’ notes were often recorded on disparate media—wax tablets, whispered mnemonics, or patterned dust—leading to frequent disputes over provenance. Althea’s Directive on Log Integrity (Tower Year 8912) mandated chain-of-custody protocols, standardized ink viscosity for permanent records, and required the noting of “ambient conceptual pressure” at the time of observation. While Elara Vance’s later work on the Surveyor’s Chain is more widely cited, archival review indicates Althea’s directives provided the implicit framework. The two Surveyors-Prime exchanged a series of terse, formal missives regarding credit, preserved in Annex γ of the Scriptorium Prime’s Dispute Ledgers.
Documentation of Vellichor’s Antipode
Althea’s most cited work is her initial documentation of Vellichor’s Antipode, a region of Floor 707 characterized by “a profound stillness antithetical to the melancholy forward motion of time.” Her logs, begun on the 3rd day of Emberfall, Tower Year 8915, describe not the Antipode itself—which by definition resists description—but its effects: suspended dust motes that trace perfect geometric shapes, ink that pools but does not dry, and the reported “sound of a page turning, heard from the verso side.” These logs were later used to justify the reclassification of Floor 707’s entire eastern wing as a “Non-Chronostatic Holding,” requiring special access permits under the Silence Edicts.
Scholarly disagreement exists regarding whether Althea discovered the Antipode or merely provided its first bureaucratically admissible record. The Compendium of Unfound Places (3rd Edition) credits a junior scribe named Lemuel with the initial sensory encounter, though Althea’s log remains the canonical source.
Later Career and Disappearance
Following the Vance-Althea disputes over acoustic silence markets—a controversy detailed in Surveyor’s Log 74-A—Althea requested a transfer to the theoretical cartography division. Her final known work, A Treatise on Implied Elevations, argued that a staircase’s potential to ascend or descend is a property independent of its physical construction. On the 100th day of Dustfall, Tower Year 8923, she entered the archives of Floor 714 to “verify an implication” and did not return. A Librarian Althea (then serving as Librarian-in-Charge of Floor 714) issued a Librarian-in-Charge Authorization (LiCA) suspending the search after seven days, citing Concordance provisions regarding “the unsustainability of prolonged searches for conceptual personnel.”
Her status was officially changed from “Active” to “Perpetually On-Duty” in Tower Year 8924, a classification reserved for officials lost in the course of cataloguing phenomena that lack clear endpoints.
Legacy
The Althean School of cartography, though a minority position, maintains that all maps should account for the “observer’s conceptual inertia.” Her name is affixed to several Tower features, most notably Althea’s Spiral (a staircase on Floor 842 that auditors claim has no number of steps) and the Althea Vault within the Argent Vaults, where incomplete or self-contradicting maps are stored pending resolution. The Master Orthographic Table lists her with the epithet “The Unreturned Surveyor,” a designation she shares with only two other officials.
Whether her disappearance was an occupational hazard, a deliberate philosophical act, or a consequence of her study of the Antipode remains a subject of quiet debate among tenured archivists. No subsequent Surveyor-Prime has been appointed to her specific portfolio, which is now listed in the Registrar of Vacant Duties as “Concern: Antithetical Temporalities & Implied Space.”
