Archivist-Librarian K. Thorne

MS 7500.27 · Persons

Archivist-Librarian K. Thorne was a mid-sixth-century administrator and theoretician primarily noted for her development of the Thorne Progression logarithmic scale and her controversial stewardship of the Office of the Archivist-Librarian from Year 547 until her formal deposition in Year 582. Her tenure is characterized by a systematic, if often contested, application of quantitative metrics to the qualitative processes of Librarian Progression.

Tenure and Reforms

Appointed following the Ninth Librarian's Expedition and the subsequent confusion in the upper stacks, K. Thorne’s early reforms focused on what she termed “bibliometric accountability.” She instituted mandatory filing of Form P-9.4 (Progressional Impact Statement) for all promotion petitions beyond the rank of Archivist-in-Residence. This form required petitioners to quantify their contributions across seven axes, including “Cross-Reference Density” and “Conceptual Shelf-Life,” with scores plotted on the nascent Thorne Progression scale.

Her most impactful administrative decree, Directive 14,566-γ, mandated the re-cataloguing of all holdings on Floors 14,500–14,600 according to her Progression model. The directive was executed under the supervision of her then-protégé, Senior Librarian Aris Thorne, and resulted in the temporary designation “Gamma Stacks.” The strain of this project is widely cited as a contributing factor to the Omega Truss incident, though the final ruling on that matter was delivered by Librarian-Sergeant Thorne in Year 511, prior to K. Thorne’s own tenure.

The Thorne Progression Scale

The scale that bears her name sought to objectify the otherwise ineffable process of a librarian’s advancement. It assigns a logarithmic value (expressed in “Thorns”) to a composite of documented achievements, with thresholds corresponding to traditional ranks. For example, accruing 10 Thorns might correlate with the rank of Archivist-Provisional, while 10 Thorns was proposed as the minimum for consideration as Archivist Prelate. The model was later integrated into the more holistic Thorne-Lateralist Progression Model, though purists argue this dilution betrayed K. Thorne’s original intent for a purely empirical system.

Critics, including the later Archivist-Provisional Aris, argued in Amendment 12-b commentaries that the scale privileged quantifiable, simplistic claims of discovery over nuanced, foundational work. This scholarly disagreement remains unresolved, with Concordances Third and Seventh Concordance offering contradictory guidance on its application.

Controversies and Deposition

K. Thorne’s relationship with the broader Thorne family network within the Tower was a persistent source of scrutiny. The ruling in Thorne v. The Registry (Year 569) formally established that Senior Librarian M. Thorne was not related to High Oneirologist Aris Thorne; however, it did not address the professional ties between K. Thorne and these figures. Her sponsorship of Aris Thorne’s rapid ascent through the Oneirological Society was frequently cited by opponents as evidence of systemic favoritism, or “Progression by Proximity.”

Her downfall is officially recorded as stemming from procedural overreach during the Aris Reconciliation hearings. By attempting to apply her Progression metrics to the reconciliation process itself—specifically, by filing a Form P-9.4 on behalf of the metaphysical principles under debate—she was found in violation of Concordance Ruling Omega-V/Advisory. The Office of the Archivist-Librarian was placed under receivership, and she was deposed in Year 582. Clerk-Superior Aris Thorne was appointed to oversee the transition, a move seen by some as poetic justice.

Legacy

Despite her deposition, K. Thorne’s frameworks remain deeply embedded in Tower bureaucracy. The modern standardized Thorne Progression exam, proctored biannually, is a direct descendant of her work. Her theoretical contributions advanced the modern framework of Librarian Progression, moving it from a system of tacit consensus to one of documented, if endlessly debated, criteria.

Her personal archives, sealed under the same directive she authored, reside on Floor 14,566, Corridor Γ, Shelf 7. Access requires dual authorization from the sitting Archivist-Librarian and a direct descendant of the Thorne line, a stipulation that has fueled ongoing speculation about the nature of the materials contained within. No successful petition for access has been recorded since Year 612.
