The Prime Inscriber
MS 6707.22 · Practices and doctrines
The Prime Inscriber is the ceremonial designation for the Librarian-Inscriber who first performed the Sympathetic Substrate Introduction on a newly discovered or stabilized floor of the Tower. This role is distinct from the administrative Librarian-Prime and is concerned solely with the inaugural act of formal documentation that renders a floor's contents susceptible to cataloguing.
Role and Function
The Prime Inscriber’s duty is to perform the Rite of First Marking. This involves inscribing the floor’s official designation—its number and provisional name—onto a permanent substrate (traditionally a slate of Echo-infused quartz) using a stylus charged in the Grand Atrium's central font. The act is witnessed by a Librarian-Prime and recorded in the Log of Initializations, held by the Scriptorium Prime. According to the Second Concordance, Clause 7.3, "The Prime Inscriber’s mark does not create the floor, but rather acknowledges its latent catalogical potential, rendering its unreal subjects amenable to bibliographic confinement."
Historical Precedent and the Althea Dispute
The most famous—and contentious—historical instance involves the classification of Floor 1,022 (Althea's Vellichor). While the floor’s discovery and initial logs are credited to Surveyor-Prime Althea, the identity of its Prime Inscriber is a matter of ongoing scholarly debate. The official register in Scriptorium Prime lists Librarian-Inscriber Kaelen as the Prime Inscriber. However, a fragmentary appendix to the Fifth Concordance suggests that Althea herself performed the inaugural inscription on a fragment of surveyor’s vellum before the formal rite, a claim vehemently denied by the rival faction of Elara Vance, who cited the Silence Edicts regarding unauthorized documentary practices.
This controversy led to the now-standard procedure, outlined in the Sixth Concordance, that the Prime Inscriber must be a Librarian of at least Third Spiral rank with no direct involvement in the floor’s discovery or initial survey, to prevent claims of "cartobibliographic bias."
The Sworn Affidavit
Following the Rite of First Marking, the Prime Inscriber must provide a sworn affidavit attesting to the stability of the inscription substrate and the absence of "ontological recoil" during the procedure. This affidavit, notarized by the Scriptorium Prime, becomes a foundational document for the floor’s archival stack. The affidavit's language is rigidly proscribed by the Master Orthographic Table, and any deviation—such as the infamous case of Anselm the Damp’s use of a non-standard serif on the "Floor 409" affidavit—can result in the floor’s records being placed under provisional quarantine until a rectification rite is performed.
Materials and Instruments
The tools of the Prime Inscriber are maintained by the Chamber of Prolegomena within the Scriptorium Prime. The key instrument is the Prime Stylus, a rod of polished Echo Crystal calibrated against the Prime Metre Bar and the Register of Primary Standards. The substrate varies by floor: resonant crystal for luminous floors, treated ironwood for arboreal ones, and sheets of solidified silence for acoustically vacant zones, as per the Third Concordance, Annex Δ. The preparation of these materials often requires collaboration with the Guild of Substrate-Weavers, whose workshops are typically located three floors above the Scriptorium.
Succession and Legacy
There is no single, permanent holder of the title "The Prime Inscriber." Each floor generates its own, and an individual Librarian may serve as Prime Inscriber for multiple floors over their career. Their names are recorded in the endless Scroll of Inaugurations, but they hold no continuing authority over the floors they inscribe. Their primary legacy is the permanence—or perceived permanence—of their first mark. Instances where an inscription has faded or proven unstable (e.g., Floor 744, where the numeral "4" periodically inverts itself) are seen as profound professional failings and are reviewed by a panel convened under the Second Concordance, Clause 22.1. The role, therefore, combines supreme ceremonial honor with immense, perpetual liability.
