Surveyor's Chain
MS 7550.21 · Practices and doctrines
The Surveyor's Chain is a procedural doctrine used to establish traceable provenance for observations made during official expeditionary work within The Tower. It is distinct from, though often conflated with, the Unspooled Chain Incident and the administrative Supply Chain Logistics. The doctrine was codified by Eloise of the Unspooled Chain in Tower Year 7128 and formalized via Amendment to the Fourteenth Concordance.
Core Principle & Implementation
The fundamental tenet of the Surveyor's Chain is that any observation not linked to a preceding observation—and ultimately to the axiomatic baseline of the Tower's known architecture—is considered an "unmoored datum" and is inadmissible for cataloguing. In practice, this requires a Surveyor to begin any new log entry by citing the specific observation (e.g., a prior Surveyor's log, a confirmed architectural feature) from which their current position and perceptual frame are derived. This creates a documentary chain of custody for perspective itself.
The standard instrument for maintaining the Chain is the Chain-of-Custody Acknowledgment, a mandatory preface to all official logs. The most commonly used form, CCF-7, requires the Surveyor to list the previous three links in their perceptual chain and attest to the continuity of their sensory apparatus. A break in the chain, such as an unexplained gap in consciousness or a sudden, un-referenced spatial translocation, voids all subsequent observations until a new chain can be established from a known, fixed point.
Historical Development
Prior to formal codification, early surveying practices were notoriously inconsistent, leading to numerous cataloguing paradoxes. The pre-Chain expedition to Floor 900 documented in Surveyor's Report 900- is a classic example, where the perceptual instability of the flooring material rendered sequential observations incoherent. The doctrine was developed by Eloise following the Unspooled Chain Incident, in which an entire expedition's findings were invalidated after their point of perceptual origin could not be verified.
The finalized doctrine was heavily influenced by the work of Surveyor-Prime Elara Vance, whose meticulous logs demonstrated implicit chain-of-custody principles. Her record of the Cryptic Moth during Dustfall in Tower Year 8412 is frequently cited as a pre-codification model of rigorous observational linking.
Controversies and Disputes
The most persistent scholarly debate concerns the origin point of the Chain itself. The Chain of Non-Origin school, championed by clerks of the Western Atrium, argues that all chains are ultimately circular and that the axiomatic baseline is a convenient fiction. They point to anomalies in early logs, such as the self-referential citation loop discovered in the marginalia of Surveyor’s Log 74-A.
Further contention exists around the handling of perceptual artifacts. The case of "Forgotten Resin," noted by Junior Surveyor Kael in Appendix B of Log 74-A for its 'mnemonic adhesive' quality, prompted a seventy-year debate on whether the resin's effect on memory constituted a break in the Chain or merely a documented characteristic of the chain-link itself. The ruling, under Concordance 14-Amendment , favored the latter interpretation.
Notable Applications
The Surveyor's Chain is foundational to the Validation Chain process for archiving unstable or subjective phenomena. Its principles were critical in validating the properties of the Crystalline Polyhedron of Autonomous Sorrow, as each facet's emotional output had to be traced to a specific observational interaction.
It also saw dramatic application during the Spiral 44 Expedition under Surveyor-In-Charge Ardon. Faced with non-Euclidean stairwells, the team maintained their Chain by using synchronized harmonic hums, documented in Surveyor’s Log 74-A, as auditable perceptual anchors, allowing their maps to remain internally consistent despite spatial contradictions.
Operational Challenges
Maintaining an unbroken Chain in environments that actively compromise perception or memory is the doctrine's greatest challenge. Events like Dustfall require pre-approved contingency protocols, such as tethering observations to the periodic collapse of resonant silicate structures, a method first described in the Logbook of the 412th Surveyor-General.
The doctrine does not account for, and thus invalidates, observations made during states of so-called "inspiration" or sudden insight that cannot be linked to a prior sensory input. This has led to the permanent archival segregation of several bodies of work, most notably the collected field sketches of Elara the Mute, which are held in the Annex of Unchained Impressions.
