Sub-librarian for Ephemera
MS 7685.47 · Guilds, orders and offices
Sub-librarian for Ephemera is a senior administrative and curatorial rank within the Department of Tattered Ephemera, itself a sub-department of the Department of Applied Metaphysics. The officeholder bears ultimate procedural responsibility for the identification, assessment, and palliative maintenance of all Persistent Ephemera exhibiting advanced states of metaphysical decay within their assigned sector. The position is established under Directive 19.γ.7 and its authority is delineated across seven clauses of the Tenth Concordance.
Authority and Jurisdiction
The Sub-librarian’s authority is primarily derived from the Cataloguing Directives for Ephemera, which grants them “sole discretion in matters of epistemic triage and conceptual binding for catalogued lacunae.” In practice, this entails approving all Shelving Forms E-11 through E-45, authorizing the use of stabilized paradoxes for structural reinforcement, and certifying the metaphysical soundness of any archive floor before it is opened to general research. Their jurisdiction is not defined by geographical floors but by “conceptual adjacency,” a metric calculated by the Acoustics Chapter using resonant frequency analysis of archival silence. A typical purview may encompass several non-contiguous floors, a half-spiral, or, in one documented case, a single disused lavatory on Floor 14,302 that was found to contain a perfectly preserved “memory of a Tuesday.”
Appointment and Succession
Appointment is made by a joint committee of the Department of Tattered Ephemera and the Sub-Committee for Transient Biological Annotations, following a minimum of forty years service as a Librarian-Provisional within the ephemera track. The sole exception to this term requirement was the accession of Sub-librarian Celia, whose unprecedented direct promotion from Archival Aide-Third Class is recorded, and vigorously contested, in clause 10.A.7.223. Succession is not automatic; upon a vacancy, the office remains “in a state of procedural abeyance” until the committee can verify that no viable candidate has themselves become ephemeral. This verification process, detailed in Concordance 19, Annex Δ, involves a seven-day auditory vigil and the ceremonial burning of a blank page.
Operational Responsibilities
The operational duties of the Sub-librarian are vast and minutely specified. Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing the daily “integrity patrols” conducted by the Sub-basement Cataloguing Corps.
- Approving all applications for the “Temporary Reification Permit” (Form E-33), required for any interaction with an ephemeron that may solidify its decay.
- Maintaining the Register of Fading Certainties, a ledger where the exact moment an ephemeron ceases to be cataloguable is notated in non-repeating ink.
- Liaising with the Custodians of Ephemera on cross-jurisdictional matters, such as the ongoing containment of the Canyon of Repeating Whispers.
Furthermore, the Sub-librarian serves as the final arbiter in disputes regarding the classification of borderline phenomena, such as “forgotten melodies,” “unwritten laws,” and “the names of colors seen in dreams.”
The Seal of Lacunae
The physical symbol of the office is the Seal of Lacunae, a worn brass stamp that leaves no impression on paper but instead creates a temporary, stable vacancy in the local cataloguing schema. Its use is strictly governed by Codicil 7 of the Lumen Protocols and is reserved for instances where an ephemeron threatens to “un-shelve” adjacent factual holdings. The Seal is stored in a sound-proofed vault on Floor 47 (designated “The Muffled Room”) when not in the Sub-librarian’s direct possession. A persistent, though unverified, claim within the School of Ephemeral Cataloguing holds that the Seal itself is the Tower’s oldest catalogued ephemeron, a “procedural ghost” given form.
Scholarly Disputes
The nature of the office is a point of contention. The Literalist Chapter argues that the title “Sub-librarian” is a misnomer, as the role’s focus on decaying non-facts places it entirely outside the traditional library hierarchy; they advocate for the title “Custodian of Absences.” Conversely, the long-defunct Materialist Chapter held that the Sub-librarian does not administer ephemera but is, in fact, constituted by them—that the office is a “necessary fiction” maintained by the very lacunae it seeks to manage. This view is now considered heretical under revised interpretations of the Cataloguing Directives for Ephemera, though it persists in certain underground reading circles. A more practical dispute concerns whether the Sub-librarian’s authority extends to ephemera generated by the Tower’s own administrative processes, such as “lost meeting minutes” or “unread clauses of the Concordances.” Rulings on this matter have been inconsistent, varying by individual officeholder.
Notable Officeholders
Historical records, where they have not themselves succumbed to ephemerality, note several consequential Sub-librarians. Sub-librarian Aris (Term 34,102–34,178) is credited with formalizing the Moss-Growth Spirelocation technique for tracking mobile conceptual voids. Sub-librarian Kael (Term 41,005–41,030) famously resigned after declaring that all holdings in his sector, including himself, had “achieved a state of perfect, stable ambiguity” and thus required no further oversight. His resignation was accepted, but his subsequent whereabouts are catalogued under “theoretical persons.” The current officeholder, as of the last decadal census, is Sub-librarian Vael, whose tenure has been marked by an unusual focus on the cataloguing of “anticipated but unrealized sounds.”
