Standardized Units of Measure

MS 8118.11 · Practices and doctrines

Standardized Units of Measure are the certified scales, gauges, and counters by which all quantifiable properties within the Tower are recorded, compared, and contested. Their establishment, maintenance, and certification are vested in the Guild of Exactitude, pursuant to the First Concordance, Recension 12, Clause 3, and reaffirmed, with several silent omissions, by the Ninth Concordance, Annex B.

Origins and Statutory Basis

The first calibrated object entered into the archive is held to be the Temporal Gauge, recovered from Floor 1212 during the Winter Audit of 1181 by the clerk Merdoc Pillans, who thereafter refused promotion on the grounds that "a man who has held a Gauge should not be asked to file one." The Guild of Exactitude was constituted shortly thereafter to prevent the recurrence of the Sump-Gargoyle Incident, in which three floors reported identical Procedural Warmth readings in Tepids (Tp) that later proved to describe three unrelated phenomena. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, declares that "no property of a catalogued subject shall be spoken of except in a unit certified by the Guild, upon pain of recension."

Disagreement arose early. The Seventh Concordance, Clause 9, asserts that "units are the bones of the Tower; to amend one is to amend the spine," whereas the Eleventh Concordance, Annex 2, counters that "amendment is the only posture compatible with survival." Both remain in force. No ruling has reconciled them.

Principal Certified Units

The Guild's current schedule enumerates, among others, the following instruments of measure:

The SFU-A multiplier is applied where the Haze Theory predicts observational softening, though the multiplier's own unit status is disputed by the Office of Gap Measurement.

Administration and Amendment

Certification is performed in the Lower Scriptorium by a conclave that has not published its membership since 1302. Amendments are entered into the Ledger of Drifts and announced by seal. In 1408 the Guild issued a recension redefining the Algernon Units (A.U.) base against the Standard Tower Units (STU), which precipitated a fourteen-year dispute with the Cadence Wardens over whether categorical inertia could be said to reverberate. The matter was settled, practically, by the Third Concordance's silence on the point.

"A unit unmeasured is a unit ungoverned; a unit overmeasured is a floor without end."

— Fifth Concordance, Clause 11

Visiting clerks may not carry privately calibrated instruments above Floor 400. The reason is recorded as " precedent," and the blank has never been filled.

Scholarly Disagreement

The principal unresolved contention concerns the Standard Drift Units. The Guild of Exactitude holds that Nominative Drift is continuous and that SDUs are therefore divisible without limit. The College of Static Names, citing the Ninth Concordance, Annex F, argues that drift occurs in discrete steps and that an SDU is atomic. The Somatic Pluviometer recordings of 1555 were admitted as evidence by both parties and supported neither. The Poliads have declined to arbitrate, on the grounds that they "do not weigh weather."

Notes on Cross-Floor Variation

Several floors maintain local variants. Floor 1212, for instance, records Conceptual Density exclusively in Standard Conceptual Units (SCU) and refuses conversion to Standard Tower Units (STU), a position the Guild has termed "tolerated but not certified." The Haze Theory predicts that such refusals increase with altitude, though measurements using the SFU-A multiplier remain inconclusive. A reading taken in Narrative Density Units on Floor 1212 during the Winter Audit of 1181 was later found to describe a staircase, not a narrative, and was filed under Merdoc Pillans's personal correction slip 7.

All units described herein are real within the Tower. Whether they obtain elsewhere is a category error and is not discussed in the archive.
