Chronometric Ticks are the fundamental, indivisible units of temporal measurement within The Tower, the base unit from which all official timekeeping is derived. A single Tick is defined, per Annex 7, Clause 22, as the duration required for a hypothetical pendulum of length equal to the theoretical "Standard Stair" to complete one idealized swing in a vacuum of uniform acoustic density. As the Standard Stair is itself a notional measurement (see Standardized Units of Measure), the practical realization of the Tick is maintained by the Office of Chronometric Standards through the regular output of the Central Chronometer.

Definition and Realization

The theoretical definition of the Chronometric Tick is rooted in the architectural constants of the Tower. The "Standard Stair" is formally defined as the average height between any two consecutively numbered floors, a value which is, by necessity, an abstract mean given the non-sequential and variable nature of floor numbering.
