Definition and Realization
The theoretical definition of the Chronometric Tick is rooted in the architectural constants of the Tower. The "Standard Stair" is formally defined as the average height between any two consecutively numbered floors, a value which is, by necessity, an abstract mean given the non-sequential and variable nature of floor numbering. The Office of Chronometric Standards circumvents this paradox by deriving the operational Tick from the primary cesium-resonance heartbeat of Chronometric Standard C-1 (the Central Chronometer). The utility of such a vast base unit is a perennial subject of scholarly debate. Proponents argue it provides an immutable bedrock for cosmology, noting that major Temporal Gauges are calibrated in Ticks. Detractors, often from the Guild of Practical Horologists, point out that no human-scaled event has ever been measured in whole Ticks, rendering it a purely bureaucratic fiction.
