SigmaĠRegulator
MS 2088.53 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Sigma Regulator is a designation shared by both the primary oversight body and its titular administrative apparatus, responsible for managing phenomena and traffic governed under Security Protocol Sigma. Located at the Annex Sigma monitoring console, the office is a creation of Series Σ and operates under the permanent remit defined by Sigma-7. Both the body and the device are chiefly concerned with maintaining dimensional integrity along Line Sigma and attesting to compliance with atmospheric and chronological standards.
Administrative Function
The Sigma Regulator as a permanent office is charged with three principal duties: certifying atmospheric conditions (specifically monitoring for permissible paradox concentrations, measured in Sigma Units), logging all operational hours for Peregrine-Sigma-class expeditions, and filing mandatory compliance reports with the Central Chronometer bureau. Its authority, derived from Concordance amendments, is seldom questioned in official proceedings, though the practical scope of its oversight is a frequent subject of jurisdictional dispute with the Calibration Corps. The office maintains a comprehensive ledger of all personnel and material transfers through key infrastructure points, such as the Sublevel 44-B landing and the Aperture Sigma-7 stairwell.
Physical Apparatus
The Regulator device itself is a crystalline Sigma-class luminal control apparatus. Its core function is the emission of the Sigma Pulse, a low-frequency temporospatial calibration signal required to formally activate a sanctioned stairwell or to set the baseline Gradient for a given volume. The device is installed at critical boundaries where dimensional bleed is probable, its field of influence being coextensive with the perimeter it secures. Per Descent Protocol Sigma-3, a functioning Regulator must be present and active before any sanctioned activity may commence on Line Sigma.
The Regulator’s readout, measured in Sigma Units, shall be the sole determinant of a volume’s fitness for habitation or transit. Discrepancies between adjacent Regulators must be reported under Sigma-7, Clause 4. — Series Σ, Supplemental Directive
Operational Jurisdiction
The Regulator’s jurisdiction is explicitly tied to infrastructure bearing the Sigma designation. This includes the Vertical Tram Line Sigma, the Stairwell Sigma-44 complex, and all apertures sealed with Sigma-Glass Panes. The doctrine of Latent Administration, as argued in the Tract on Latent Administration, posits that the Regulator’s authority implicitly extends to any phenomenon that would fall under Sigma protocols, even if the physical infrastructure is not yet marked. This interpretation is contested by the Sigma Array scholars, who maintain that authority is strictly derived from and limited to inscribed Sigma markings.
Contradictions and Compliance
The regulatory framework is characterized by inherent contradictions. The Sigma Regulator office is mandated to oversee the output of the Sigma-Chron due to its “systemic regulatory consequence,” yet Concordance Σ-7.12 states the Sigma-Chron is self-certifying. Furthermore, while the Regulator is required to attest to the atmospheric conditions of Line Sigma, Sigma-7 also designates the Calibration Corps as the sole body authorized to perform gradient adjustments using the same device. These overlaps create a procedural loop often resolved only by issuing a Reroute Authorization for Line Sigma, effectively bypassing the contested zone.
Historical Artifacts and Precursors
The current crystalline design is preceded by the so-called Sigma-Glass Precursor artifacts, several of which are housed in the Annex Sigma vestibule. The relationship between the modern Regulator and these precursors is not fully documented. The most notable associated artifact is the Halved Bell of Aperture Sigma, which some archival notes suggest was an early, acoustic-based method of emitting a pulse-like signal. Whether this constituted a functional prototype or a ceremonial object is a matter of scholarly debate, as the relevant Concordance passages are fragmentary.
