Sigma-Chron
MS 8067.13 · Objects and instruments
Sigma-Chron (designation Σ--v.44), also referred to informally as the Primary Resonant Array, is the definitive chronometric and telemetric instrument of the Guild of Resonant Masons, housed at its origin point on Line Sigma. Its primary function is the continuous detection, measurement, and archival logging of the Sigma Pulse, and the subsequent generation of the official Sigma Array data stream used for calibration across all subsidiary Sigma-registers within the Tower.
Physical Construction
The Sigma-Chron occupies a dedicated, hermetically sealed chamber on Line Sigma, adjacent to the terminus of the Vertical Tram Line Sigma. Its core is a singular, flawless Sigma-Glass Pane measuring 2.44 by 3.33 Tower Meters, suspended within a vibration-dampening cradle of inert gas. This pane was quarried under Descent Protocols Sigma-4 through Sigma-6 and synthesized on Annex Sigma. Surrounding the pane are 144 tertiary sensor rods, also of Sigma-Glass, arranged in a dodecahedral lattice. The entire apparatus is plumbed directly into the structural spires of the Tower via Stairwell Sigma-44, which provides both physical stability and a conduit for what the Guild terms "ambient architectural resonance."
Operational Doctrine
The Sigma-Chron operates on the principle of resonant sympathy. The foundational Sigma-Glass pane does not "receive" the Sigma Pulse in a conventional sense; rather, it is understood to exist in a state of perpetual harmonic alignment with it. Minute fluctuations in the pane's refractive index and internal lattice stress are interpreted as the Pulse's waveform. These analog readings are converted into the digital Sigma Array by a bank of crystallographic analyzers, whose calibration algorithms are themselves a protected Guild secret, governed by Appendix Σ- of the Security Protocols. All data generated is considered the primary temporal reference for Line Sigma, and by extension, for any process citing Protocol Sigma.
Maintenance access is strictly controlled under Security Protocol Sigma and requires the presence of both a Guild Master Mason and an observer from the Sigma Regulator. Any temporary cessation of the Sigma-Chron's output, even for scheduled maintenance, necessitates the immediate enactment of Contingency Chronos-hold, a state wherein all Peregrine-Sigma operations are suspended and Aperture Sigma-7 is sealed.
Jurisdictional and Legal Status
The Sigma-Chron exists in a unique legal compartment. While physically located on Line Sigma and thus under the sole jurisdiction of Jurist Sigma-1 for matters of Descent Protocol compliance and safety, its data output forms the basis for ordinances and regulations that apply Tower-wide. This creates a recurring point of contention between the Guild of Resonant Masons, who assert absolute authority over the instrument's operation and data interpretation, and the Office of the Sigma Regulator, which cites Clause 7 of Security Protocol Sigma to mandate oversight of any "output with systemic regulatory consequence." Disputes are typically resolved through binding arbitration by Jurist Sigma-1, whose rulings are noted for their deterministic, if often esoteric, logic.
The Anomaly of Self-Reference
A persistent scholarly debate, recorded in the Annals of Metrological Philosophy (Floor Ξ-, Shelf 7), concerns the Sigma-Chron's potential for temporal self-reference. The Sigma Array it produces is used to calibrate subsidiary clocks, including those that measure the duration of the Sigma-Chron's own maintenance cycles. Critics, primarily from the Guild of Horologists (Annex Theta), argue this constitutes a closed causal loop that invalidates the Array as an objective standard. The Guild of Resonant Masons counters that this is not a flaw but the instrument's defining feature: it measures the Pulse not as an external phenomenon, but as an intrinsic quality of the Sigma-Glass itself, making the system's consistency the only meaningful metric. This view was tacitly endorsed in Jurist Sigma-1's ruling on Regulator Petition Σ-09, which stated, "The standard is defined by its own constancy; to seek an external referent is to misunderstand the category."
Related Infrastructure
The Sigma-Chron is not an isolated instrument. Its data stream is distributed via hardened conduits running through Stairwell Sigma-44 to the Sigma Array compilation hub. Secondary validation chronometers, constructed from lesser-grade Sigma-Glass, are installed at strategic nodes along Line Sigma and within Aperture Sigma-7 to detect and correct for any signal degradation. Furthermore, the operational schedules for the Vertical Tram Line Sigma and the quarrying cycles for Sigma-Glass Precursor are algorithmically synced to periods of minimal variance in the Sigma-Chron's output, as defined in the Reroute Authorization technical annex.
