Receiver-Complex Theta

MS 2081.23 · Places and structures

“The sole measure of a Receiver-Complex is its silence; the sole measure of that silence is its depth.” — Concordance Theta, Clause Theta-12.4.7b, Interpretation 44.

Receiver-Complex Theta is an acoustic isolation and measurement facility situated within Spiral Theta's main resonance column. It is the primary terminus for acoustic anomalies routed by the Office of the Receiver of Irregularities for cataloguing under General Order Theta-7. The Complex’s purpose, as defined in Concordance Theta Clause Theta-12.4.7, is to “receive, quantify, and archive the structural implications of sound that has not yet, and may never, occur.”

Physical Structure and Location

The Complex occupies a non-Euclidean interstitial volume between Spiral 44, Aperture Theta and the primary archive stacks of Spiral Theta. Access is governed by Cipher Theta and requires passage through three anechoic vestibules, each lined with a distinct proprietary damping material as specified in Materials Directive Theta-4. The central chamber is a dodecahedral space measuring 17.3 meters per internal edge, though this measurement is known to vary by ±0.5 meters depending on the calibrated frequency of the ambient silence. The walls are seamless and finished with a non-reflective coating of stabilized Gradient particulate, which absorbs 99.98% of incident acoustic energy above 1 Hz.

Operational Protocol

Upon formal identification of an acoustic irregularity—typically a described sound that leaves no physical vibration, or a vibration that produces no describable sound—a triplicated Discrepancy Form 37-A is filed. If the anomaly is deemed “of sufficient ontological ambiguity,” it is assigned a Theta-series docket number and physically escorted to the Receiver-Complex by a silent convoys of two Librarians. Within the Complex, the anomaly is not “played” but “presented” within a suspended interference field. The resulting interaction, or lack thereof, is measured by an array of Theta Calipers and Pattern Theta Resin-Spreaders, which transcribe the quality of the silence onto a continuous parchment roll.

These transcribed “silence profiles” are then forwarded to the Department of Acoustic Cartography for formal cataloguing and cross-referencing with existing profiles of known unrealized sounds.

Notable Holdings and Incidents

The archive of silence profiles is stored in Annex Theta, with the master ledgers maintained at Floor -17, Annex Theta. Notable catalogued entries include:

  • Profile Theta-441: The “Sigh of the Unfinished Catalogue.” Recorded for 44 hours in 712 AT (After Theta), this profile corresponds to the described but never-heard sigh attributed to the ghost of the Catalogue Schism of Floor 10,112. The profile was later used by Archivist-Provisional Kael to calibrate the resonance of column Theta-7.
  • Profile Theta-9001: The “Echo of a Decision Unmade.” This is a negative resonance profile, indicating a sound that was so fully absorbed by the possibility of its own making that it created a permanent vacancy in the acoustic substrate of the Complex. The vacancy is maintained under a constant hum at 7 Hz to prevent collapse.
  • The Theta Incident: In 881 AT, an Ambivalent Artefact, Class Theta was mistakenly delivered to the Complex instead of the designated annex. Its mere presence, while utterly silent, caused all measurement calipers in the chamber to inscribe perfect circles for 37 minutes, a period now referenced in Emergency Protocol Theta.

Administrative and Doctrinal Ambiguities

The legal and ontological status of the sounds processed by Receiver-Complex Theta remains a point of scholarly contention, as reflected in contradictory rulings within the Concordances.

  • Ruling 88theta, appended to Concordance Theta as Clause Theta-12.4.7a, asserts that a sound received and profiled by the Complex “attains a state of administrative reality sufficient for indexing,” regardless of its physical manifestation.
  • Conversely, an annotation to the Seventh Concordance argues that such profiling merely creates “a phantom of procedure, a sound-shaped hole in the bureaucracy.” This view holds that the profiles in Annex Theta are not records of sounds, but records of the Complex’s own operational artifacts.
  • The Expeditionary Party Theta-9 report of 902 AT suggested that the Complex was not measuring external anomalies but was, in fact, the source of a “fundamental background silence” that permeates Spiral Theta, and that all processed discrepancies were merely localized eddies in this silence. This theory was dismissed for contradicting Ordinance Theta-4, but not formally refuted.

Maintenance and Calibration

The Complex undergoes mandatory re-silencing every 44 months, a procedure that involves replacing the damping particulates and re-aligning the Theta Calipers against a master profile of “Absolute Zero Audibility,” maintained in a vacuum-sealed vault on Floor -17, Annex Theta. During this procedure, all archived silence profiles are temporarily transferred to a backup resonator in Spiral 44, Aperture Theta, a process outlined in Emergency Protocol Theta, Section 4.
