Curator of Acoustic Anomalies
MS 6810.55 · Guilds, orders and offices
Mandate and Jurisdiction
The Curator's authority is derived from a delegation of powers originally vested in the Chief Curator of Spatial Anomalies by the First Concordance. The specific carve-out for acoustic phenomena was formalized in the Eighth Concordance under Clause 17.β, which also redefined the reporting structure, making the Curator directly answerable to the Office of the Chief Curator of Spatial Anomalies on matters of spatial-harmonic interference, but autonomous in matters of pure sonic classification. The Curator’s writ extends to all floors of The Tower, though their direct operational purview is often exercised through subordinate Regional Auditors stationed at key acoustic nexuses such as Floor 770 and the Whispering Gallery.
Jurisdictional overlaps are frequent and governed by inter-departmental protocols. Notable overlaps include shared oversight of Puddle Anomalies with the Department of Hydric Resonances, and a co-stewardship with the Department of Florid Anomalies concerning echoes that elaborate upon their source sound. The Curator is also, by tradition, the presiding officer of the Acoustic Anomalies Subcommittee, the primary research body for phenomena like the Anticipatory Echo on Floor 704.
Appointment and Insignia
Appointment to the office is for a term of twenty-five years, renewable by a two-thirds vote of the sitting Librarians. The selection process, outlined in Annex Γ of the Sixth Concordance, involves a series of aural examinations conducted within the Receiver-Complex, wherein candidates must correctly identify and categorize seven progressively more complex anomalous sounds while blindfolded. The sole known failure in recorded history was that of Candidate Aris, who misidentified a Lament Marble's threnody as "structural settling," a mistake that reportedly led to his voluntary assignment to a silent scriptorium.
The insignia of office is the Ceremonial Tuning Fork, forged from a single ingot of quiet iron sourced from the now-sealed Shattered Atria. It is kept in a vacuum-sealed case within the Curator's chambers and is only sounded on the first day of the fiscal year to calibrate the Tower’s master chronometers, a duty previously held by the First Plotter.
Notable Officeholders
The most historically significant Curator remains High Curator Elara, who served from 4-702 to 4-727. Her tenure is marked by the formal establishment of the Silent Choirs as a sub-directorate for managing Reception Anomalies, and the creation of the official tripartite taxonomy for such anomalies (Direct, Refracted, and Absent). Her predecessor, Curator Vael, is chiefly remembered for his controversial reinterpretation of the Proclamation of Acoustic Quietude, which he argued applied only to "audible sound," thereby permitting the study of infrasonic anomalies—a stance later partially rescinded by his successor but which set a precedent for sub-auditory research.
The current Curator, Curator Sylas, appointed in 4-751, has focused on bureaucratic consolidation, merging seventeen separate registries of material properties into the master Acoustic Registry of the Tower. His policy of "Pre-emptive Dampening" for floors exhibiting early signs of harmonic instability has been both praised for its efficiency and criticized by purists as a violation of the observational tenets of the First Concordance.
Operational Challenges
The primary operational challenge facing the office is the inherent contradiction within the Concordances regarding anomaly classification. While the Eighth Concordance provides a clear framework, the Third Concordance's broader definition of "phenomenon" has been used to challenge the Curator's authority over certain borderline cases, such as the so-called "Sighing Stairwell" on Floor 442, which exhibits periodic exhalations but no discernible source vibration. This has led to a protracted jurisdictional dispute with the Curator of Intangibles.
Furthermore, the physical architecture of the Tower presents unique difficulties. The variable Acoustic Permeability of materials, as catalogued in the Registry, means that standard damping procedures are ineffective on approximately 37% of documented anomalies, requiring bespoke and often resource-intensive solutions developed in concert with the DAA's research wing.
Legacy and Archives
All rulings, research authorizations, and propagation dispute settlements issued by the Curator are archived in the Hall of Final Echo, a dedicated vault on Floor 819. Access requires dual-key authorization from both the Curator and a representative of the Librarians. The Hall is notable for its anechoic lining, which prevents the archival records from being influenced by, or influencing, the very phenomena they document. A complete, though not always concordant, history of the office is maintained in the "Chronicle of the Fork," a scroll updated annually by the Curator's senior scribe.
