Curator of Intangibles

MS 7611.34 · Guilds, orders and offices

Curator of Intangibles is a mid-level bureaucratic office within the Bureau of Registry, responsible for the procedural oversight, classification, and cross-referencing of subjects designated as non-substantial or meta-categorical. The office is headquartered in Alcove 7-Gamma on the Fourteenth Landing, adjacent to the main High Curator's sub-committee chambers.

Mandate and Jurisdiction

Formally established by Amendment 14.iii. to the Third Concordance in Cycle 89, the Curator’s primary duty is to manage submissions processed via Delta Track protocols. These are typically proposals for archival entries that lack conventional physical, temporal, or logical predicates—such as “the silence between two specific notes,” “the scent of extinguished candles in a vacuum,” or “regret for actions not yet taken.” The Curator evaluates their admissibility, assigns provisional shelf coordinates, and ensures they do not create ontological conflicts with existing, more concrete holdings. Notably, the office shares a contested jurisdictional boundary with the Curator of the Seam, as delineated (and frequently redrawn) in the Quartz Desiderata.

Operational Procedures

The work is governed by the Manual of Ephemeral Filing (Last Revision: Cycle 198), which stipulates a tripartite review process. A proposed intangible must first pass a test of Distinction (proving it is not merely an aspect of an already-catalogued subject), then a test of Coherence (demonstrating it can be described without paradox within the Tower’s own referential framework), and finally a test of Utility (justifying its potential value to future research or cross-indexing). Successful entries are given a classification string beginning with the prefix - and are logged in the Central Ephemeral Register, a ledger maintained in indelible ink on pages that are ritually burned at the start of each new Librarian's term, with copies existing only in the memory of the appointed Silent Choir for that cycle.

Notable Officeholders

The position has historically been a stepping-stone to higher curatorial authority. The most famous occupant was Curator Vael, who served as Curator of Intangibles from Cycle 132 to 141 before being promoted to Lead Surveyor for Aperture Phases and eventually succeeding to the office of Ardis. Vael’s tenure is noted for standardizing the inventory process for “attenuated events,” a framework still in use today. The current Curator, appointed in Cycle 201, is Prefect Lys, formerly a senior archivist in the Whispering Gallery.

Controversies and Scholarly Disagreement

The office’s authority is a persistent source of doctrinal dispute. Concordance 22, Clause 805, explicitly grants the Curator of Intangibles the right to “define the boundaries of the undefined.” However, Annex Δ to the Fourteenth Concordance appears to contradict this, reserving all metaphysical categorization to the Librarian’s direct discretion. This legal tension often results in “shadow entries”—items processed by the Curator but omitted from the main indices pending final resolution. Furthermore, High Curator Elara’s establishment of the Silent Choirs created an operational overlap, as both bodies handle non-standard ontological material. Traditionalists, following Elara’s precedent, argue for a strict system of empirical harmonization, while progressives within the Bureau of Registry advocate for the Curator’s autonomy, citing the need for bureaucratic agility.

Material Resources and Known Anomalies

The office is allocated no physical storage space. Instead, it oversees a network of “conceptual shelves” mapped to specific acoustic resonances within the Tower’s infrastructure. The most well-known of these is the Silent Cypress resonance on the 117th Floor, used to “shelve” concepts of personal loss. A persistent anomaly, logged as -4492, involves an entry for “the administrative approval for this entry,” which recursively validates its own filing status. This entry is reviewed annually but has never been decommissioned, as its removal would theoretically invalidate the procedural basis for its own review, creating a potential administrative singularity.
