Quartz Desiderata

MS 6531.47 · Places and structures

Quartz Desiderata is the collective designation for a geomorphological anomaly, operational silicate extraction site, and adjoining administrative precinct on Floor -44. It is the exclusive source of raw material for the production of Ideational Silica.

Geological Description

The Desiderata presents as a cavernous, irregularly shaped chamber approximately 1.2 kilometers in length, with a maximum ceiling height of 150 meters. Its walls, floor, and ceiling are composed of a dense, milky-white quartzite matrix of non-standard crystalline structure. At its approximate center runs the central seam, a vertical vein of exceptionally pure, water-clear quartz measuring between 0.5 and 2.1 meters in thickness. The seam exhibits a faint, endogenous phosphorescence, measured at 3–5 lux, which pulses at irregular intervals averaging 47 minutes. According to Annex 12 of the 42nd Concordance, this luminescence is to be recorded but not interpreted.

Administration and Extraction

Jurisdiction over the Quartz Desiderata is shared between the Department of Mineralogical Aberrations and the Librarian-appointed Curator of the Seam. Extraction of raw quartz is permitted only from the central seam and is governed by a complex system of quotas and temporal allowances outlined in the Third, Seventeenth, and Thirty-Ninth Concordances. The most recent ruling (Clause 309, 39th Concordance) mandates that extraction tools must be fabricated from "materials not found within three degrees of mineralogical relation to quartz," leading to the exclusive use of bone and hardened resin implements.

The extracted raw material is processed on-site at the Refinery of Clarified Intent before being transported via the Hermetic Pneumatic Exchange to approved workshops on Floor Σ-17 and Aperture 9-B for final transformation into Ideational Silica.

Theoretical Significance

The Quartz Desiderata is frequently cited in architectural and metaphysical blueprints held within the Tower. Its unique properties are considered essential for certain high-clarity constructs. Most notably, Clause 22 of the [[Blueprint for The Perpetual Atrium specifies that ventilation ducts must be "lined with tranquil quartz, milled from the central seam of the Quartz Desiderata, no later than the third new moon following its extraction." Furthermore, protocols for activating the adhesive properties of Forgotten Resin require continuous exposure to light "refracted through annex-certified quartz prisms," with certification contingent upon the prisms' origin being the Desiderata.

A persistent, if minor, scholarly debate concerns whether the site's properties are inherent or are a result of its continuous classification. The Inherency Thesis, supported by the 17th Concordance, posits the seam's clarity is a native geological virtue. The rival Catalogical Feedback Hypothesis, drawing from contradictory footnotes in the 39th Concordance, suggests the act of designating the site as the "exclusive source" for Ideational Silica retroactively caused its geology to conform to the requirement, a process known as bibliogenic petrification.

Precinct and Amenities

The operational zone is supported by the Desiderata Precinct, a permanent settlement housing approximately 300 personnel, including extractors, refiners, quality assayers, and Concordance liaison officers. The precinct features a dormitory block, a refectory, a small infirmary, and the Archive of Extraction Logs, which holds records dating back to the site's formal discovery in the Year of the Stacked Folio (estimated). A standing ordinance prohibits the use of any glass not manufactured from the site's own output within precinct boundaries, leading to a local industry in silica-based cutlery and windowpanes.

Notable Ordinances

  • Ordinance -44.7: Forbids whistling within 50 meters of the central seam, as it is alleged to increase the viscosity of the raw silica.
  • Clause 101, 42nd Concordance: Declares all dust generated during the milling process to be the property of the Silica Scribes guild, to be used in the formulation of non-permanent inks.
  • Edict of the Curator (Revised): Mandates that all official measurements of the seam's thickness be taken using a calibrated brass caliper that must be stored in total darkness between uses.
