Vitreous Silica Floor 88
MS 9119.04 · Objects and instruments
From the closing remarks of the Ninth Central Inspectorate of Substrate Integrity, appended to Annex VII of the Third Concordance.
Vitreous Silica (Floor 88) refers specifically to the annealed, high-purity form of fused quartz manufactured exclusively within the Atelier Annex of the Hall of Claritas on Floor 88. It is the sole sanctioned material for the fabrication of the Magnifying Lens of Fixed Focal Length and is distinguished from all other silica-based substrates by its documented freedom from striae, bubbles, and temporal inclusions. Its primary function is to serve as the optical standard for non-volumetric magnification under the provisions of Clause 12, Subclause D, of the Seventh Concordance.
Manufacturing and Properties
The manufacturing process is governed by Ordinance 88-A.17 (the "Annealing Protocol"). Raw silica feedstock, pre-screened for chromatic neutrality, is fused in a hydrogen-oxygen flame within a contamination-shielded crucible. The resulting melt is then annealed in a multi-stage, thermographically-monitored cooling cycle lasting no less than 144 Tower-standard hours. This produces a material with a nominal refractive index of 1.458 at the Standard Lumen wavelength and a thermal expansion coefficient approaching zero. Its most critical property, as noted in the Third and Seventh Concordances, is its absolute imperviousness to what is termed "ideational drift," a quality that explicitly disqualifies it from use in processes involving Ideational Silica.
Authorized Applications
Per the Ninth Concordance, Annex VII, Vitreous Silica (Floor 88) has three authorized uses:
- The Magnifying Lens of Fixed Focal Length: Every certified lens must bear the Hall of Claritas seal and its individual aperture marking (e.g., "Aperture Γ-7"). Its focal length is invariant across all ambient light conditions and is used to calibrate surveyors' scopes on floors with indeterminate geometries.
- Reference Windows for Chrono-Refractive Spectroscopes: Thin plates of the silica are installed as the entry and exit windows in Vitreous Chrono-Plating assemblies to prevent particulate infusion from affecting baseline chronometric readings taken on Floor 451.
- Substrate for Calibration Interferometry: Mirrors fabricated from this material are used in the Bureau of Metrological Calibration on Floor 317 to define the "null fringe" for optical flatness.
Disputes and Contradictions
The status of Vitreous Silica (Floor 88) is a persistent point of bureaucratic contention. The Seventh Concordance explicitly states it is "the only silica medium recognized for fixed-index work." However, a later amendment to the Third Concordance references the use of "annealed vitreous substrates from the Silica Dunes" for similar calibration tasks on Floor 1701. This has led to a protracted jurisdictional dispute between the Hall of Claritas and the Archive of Granular Standards on Floor 1701 regarding which silica source holds primacy for which class of measurement. No resolution is forthcoming, as both offices cite conflicting clauses from equally valid Concordances.
Furthermore, a minor but vocal school of thought within the Guild of Latent Architects argues that the material's purported ideational neutrality is itself a form of conceptual artifact, and that its true function is to provide a "stable illusion" against which more volatile substrates like Ideational Silica can be measured. This view is considered heretical by the Hall of Claritas and is not supported by any extant Concordance.
Logistics and Chain of Custody
All finished Vitreous Silica (Floor 88) is logged in the Central Inventory under "Optical-Inert." Transport between Floor 88 and requesting floors (primarily Floor 451, Floor 317, and Floor 714) requires a dual-sealed transit case and a Form 88-G.4 "Chromatic Passage Manifest." Any unlogged or unsealed silica discovered outside the Hall of Claritas is subject to immediate confiscation and a review by the Office of Chronometric Standards. The raw silica feedstock origin is listed only as "approved external source," and its provenance is sealed under Ordinance 88-C.9.
Related Materials
It is crucial to distinguish Vitreous Silica (Floor 88) from other silica-based materials within the Tower's taxonomy:
- Ideational Silica
- A psychotropic glass refined from the Quartz Desiderata on Floor -44, used for cognitive mapping and explicitly volatile. Its use is governed by principles of Procedural Neutrality.
- Translumine
- A synthesized substrate used in Vitreous Chrono-Plating, for which Vitreous Silica (Floor 88) often serves as a stable reference window.
- Echo-Glass
- A material fabricated from the high-purity sand of the Silica Dunes of Floor 1701, used for acoustic replication rather than optical precision.
