Curator Sigma

MS 2559.47 · Guilds, orders and offices

Curator Sigma is a disputed curatorial post of the middle strata, attested in the personnel rolls of Floor 4,118 from the 61st Cycle onward and abolished, restored, and abolished again on four separate occasions. The post carries no fixed department. Its holder is charged with the oversight of properties that exist only while in transit between floors, and for this reason the office has never been assigned a permanent door. Curators Sigma are recorded by numeral rather than by name; the rolls list them as Curator Sigma I through Curator Sigma XI, with an unnumbered interregnum of eleven years following the events described below.

Origin and the Sigma Question

The office is first named in Concordance 44, which assigns to "the Curator of the Sigma, being the keeper of passages, the oversight of all holdings that are not presently anywhere" (Concordance 44, Clause 9). Whether this language created the post or merely recognised a function already performed informally is the substance of the long-running dispute known as the Sigma Question.

Curator Vellin of the Antiquarian Spire holds the traditionalist position, arguing that the office predates the wording of Concordance 44 and was known in the older registers as the Custodian of Passages, in the same manner that he argues the title 'Curator' was originally 'Custodian of Precedents'. The opposing reading, advanced by the Curator of Precedents, maintains that nothing can predate a Concordance's own account of itself and that Clause 9 must therefore be treated as an act of creation. No resolution has been entered. The Curator of Unwritten Reasons has twice declined to supply one, noting that the question turns on a document that does not exist.

Duties and the Transit Roll

A Curator Sigma maintains the transit roll: a running ledger of every catalogued property currently between floors, with the floor of departure, the intended floor of arrival, and the hour at which the property was last certified to be in neither place. The roll is read aloud at the close of each shift, an observance retained from the office's earliest period. Properties remain on the roll until a receiving floor acknowledges them; a property whose destination floor declines to acknowledge it stays on the roll indefinitely and continues to be read aloud, which is why the reading at Floor 4,118 has not concluded before the bell in recorded memory.

The office may authorise a Sigma Transfer in cases where a property has begun to whisper during transit, but must obtain the countersignature of the Curator of Acoustic Anomalies and, where the property is untranslatable, of the Curator of Intangibles. Material Filing Sigma-9 governs the physical handling of such properties and is not to be consulted while the transit roll is open.

The Fourth Abolition and the Vael Ruling

The post was abolished for the fourth time in Cycle 8,442 by administrative act of Curator Vael, then steward of that Cycle, who reasoned that an office defined by the absence of its subject could not itself be said to occupy a post. The ruling was entered without prejudice and without a successor designation, and the transit roll went unread for a season and a half.

Its consequences were immediate and are still cited. Holdings in transit were found to have accumulated at the landings of the Aperture Sigma-7 stairwell, which by the winter of that Cycle was impassable above the ninth landing. The Curator of Ambiguous Holdings lodged a complaint in the following terms:

"A thing in transit without a keeper in transit is not a holding but a rumour, and rumours have no floor number. We are asked to catalogue what the stairwell contains. The stairwell does not contain it. It is on its way to being contained, and the office that watched it on its way has been struck from the rolls."

— Complaint of the Curator of Ambiguous Holdings, entered Cycle 8,442, appended to Material Filing Sigma-9

The post was restored in the 8,443rd Cycle under the oversight of the High Curator, who ratified the appointment of Curator Sigma V and directed that the transit roll be read in full before any further abolition took effect. Whether Curator Vael's ruling was ever formally rescinded is not recorded; the restoration proceeded on the understanding that it had been.

Regalia and the Sealed Register

Curators Sigma wear no seal of office, on the grounds that a seal is a mark of location and the office has none. They carry instead a blank brass tally, unpunched, which is surrendered on the holder's retirement and immediately replaced. The tally of Curator Sigma VII, who served nineteen years without once leaving the fourth gallery, is held at Dock Sigma and is the only such object in the archive with a provenance note attached.

The office keeps one closed register, the Sigma Register of Unarrived Holdings, which may be opened only by a Curator Sigma and only in the presence of a second Curator Sigma. Since the abolition of 8,442 the register has had no lawful opener, and its contents are presumed to have continued to arrive in its absence. Requests to open it are directed to the Curator of Ephemera, who returns them unread.

Appointments to the post are ratified by the High Curator and recorded by the Curator of Precedents; the current designation, if any, is listed in the rolls as pending. Visitors to Floor 4,118 are asked not to stand on the transit line while the roll is being read.
