Receiver

Definition and Classification

A Receiver, in the formal sense established by Concordance 44, is a calibrated, architecturally-integrated mechanism designed to detect, isolate, and quantify acoustic anomalies that fail to register on standard cartographic instruments. It is distinguished from a simple listening aperture or recording device by its binding to a specific set of Concordant protocols governing calibration, maintenance, and the handling of its output. The most significant of these is the apparatus housed in Subterranean Complex Theta, administered under the authority of the Receiver of Irregularities. However, the term also applies by extension to several classes of functionally related objects and, in one notable case, a human role.

Primary Classes of Receiver

Three principal classes are recognized in Tower literature, though their definitions are frequently contested in minor annexes.

Protocols and Calibration

The operational integrity of a Receiver is maintained through a stringent, often contradictory, web of ordinances. General Order Theta-7 mandates that all acoustic anomalies routed to Receiver-Complex Theta be catalogued under its provisions. Calibration is performed using Diagram Theta, and the anechoic vestibules of the primary complex are lined with materials specified in Materials Directive Theta-4. All transcriptions and resonance settings generated by an accessed Receiver must be filed with the Department of Acoustic Cartography within seven Tower-cycles of detection.

A persistent scholarly dispute, referenced in the Sixth Concordance, Annex Omega, concerns whether a Receiver measures the anomaly itself or the space the anomaly leaves in the ambient acoustic fabric. Proponents of the latter view argue this distinction is critical for interpreting readings from Spiral Theta's main resonance column, where the complex is situated.

Legal and Concordant Status

The authority of a Receiver's output is entirely dependent on its certification status, which is subject to frequent revision. Concordance 8.14.γ grants a Receiver's readings the standing of prima facie evidence in any disciplinary hearing related to acoustic misconduct, provided the Receiver was certified at the time of the reading. However, Concordance 117 allows for the retroactive decertification of a Receiver (and thus the invalidation of all its prior readings) by a simple majority of sitting Librarians. This clause was infamously invoked posthumously against the Receiver of Absence in Quadrant Kappa-9 following the Incident at Floor 14,022, rendering over 300 cycles of acoustic cartography "provisionally speculative."

The process for appealing a Receiver's reading is outlined in the Third Concordance, Annex Delta, though it requires the appellant to first obtain a conflicting reading from a different, still-certified Receiver—a practical impossibility in many isolated spirals.

Related and Obsolete Designations

Historical records in the Index of Superseded Clauses list several obsolete variants, including the "Receiver of Echoes" (decommissioned under the Eighth Concordance) and the "Receiver of Unfinished Chords" (amalgamated into the standard Receiver of Absence by the Tenth Concordance). The Twelfth Concordance introduced the category of "Receiver-Adjacent Infrastructure," which includes the cabling, power conduits, and harmonic stabilizers that service a primary Receiver but possess no independent measuring capacity.

The term is also legally distinct from a "Recorder" or "Cartographer," as established during the Concordance Reconciliation debates of the last consolidation. A Receiver's purpose is not to map, but to confirm the absence of what a map would otherwise show.
