Spiral Theta (Archive)

MS 8285.66 · Practices and doctrines

Spiral Theta (Archive) is the collective designation for the archival holdings, reading terraces, and interstitial spaces housed within the upper and lower reaches of Spiral Theta, the forty-seven-tiered helical stack that forms the core of Sector Theta. The Archive is not a floor but a condition: any surface within Spiral Theta on which a document has been permitted to rest for longer than one administrative season is, by the terms of Ordinance Theta-4, "thereafter of the Archive, and answerable to it." The designation is applied in the singular, and the Archive is referred to as a single institution despite occupying no continuous volume.

The Archive is administered from the Provisional Index to Spiral Theta, a finding-aid whose own revision history is more frequently consulted than the materials it describes. Access is governed by Cipher Theta and is not uniform across tiers.

Extent and internal arrangement

The Archive's holdings are recorded as occupying forty-four of the forty-seven primary tiers, the remaining three being given over to structural resonance and to the Receiver-Complex Theta, which occupies a non-Euclidean interstitial volume between Spiral 44, Aperture Theta and the primary stacks. Because the spiral does not close, the same shelf-mark may denote two distinct holdings depending on the direction from which a reader approaches it; the Provisional Index to Spiral Theta resolves this ambiguity by recording both and declining to choose.

A representative inventory, taken from the tier recorded as 31 (lower reading) during the survey of the ninth winter:

  • Case dockets, adjudicated — 2,411 bound volumes
  • Case dockets, pending — one volume, rebound annually
  • Precedent logs, superseded — 88 linear spans
  • Verdict transcripts, partially legible — 604 folios
  • Shelf-ladders, ceremonial — 3
  • Dust, settled, Chamber of — see separate holding

The interstitial holdings

The Archive maintains several spaces that are neither wholly within Spiral Theta nor wholly outside it. Chief among these is the Chamber of Settled Dust, which the Spiral Theta Adjudication Panel has ruled, in Ruling 88 theta, to be "an interstitial space within the broader complex of the Archive," and therefore subject to archival jurisdiction even where it is not contiguous with any shelf. The Chamber holds the accumulated dust of the Archive's upper tiers, which is catalogued by volume, density, and the tier of its origin, and may be consulted by petition.

The Archive of Provisional Methods, located adjacent to Aperture Theta-7, is often mistaken for a division of the present Archive. It is not. Its holdings are methods, whereas the Archive's holdings are records of what methods have produced. The distinction was clarified only after a long feud between the two offices, described below.

Access and the Cipher Theta disagreement

Access protocols within Spiral Theta are set by Cipher Theta, whose rulings the Archive applies without independent review. This arrangement is not universally accepted. The central dispute concerns whether the Archive's holdings are answerable to Cipher Theta at all, or whether the settlement of access questions belongs instead to the Spiral Theta Adjudication Panel, which has issued rulings on access purporting to bind Cipher Theta itself.

The matter turns on the interpretation of Ruling 88 theta, which held that the Chamber of Settled Dust was interstitial and thus archival. Cipher Theta has read the ruling narrowly, as establishing jurisdiction over that Chamber alone; the Panel has read it broadly, as establishing the principle that interstitial spaces fall to the Archive and that access to them therefore falls to the Panel. Both readings are recorded in the Provisional Index to Spiral Theta under the same shelf-mark, and neither is marked as superseding the other.

"Where a space admits of two approaches, the record shall admit of two entries, and neither shall be preferred until the question is settled by use."

— Cipher Theta, Protocol 12, marginal note

The Clerk's Grievance

Between the fourth and seventh winters of the current survey, the reconciliation of Diagram Theta with the Archive's tier registers was assigned to a clerk of the lower reading terraces, whose name is preserved in the Sector Theta Re-cataloguing Project as "the reconciling hand, unnamed." The clerk's grievance, filed in triplicate and never withdrawn, was that Diagram Theta and the Archive's registers disagreed on the position of eleven shelves, and that no office would accept responsibility for determining which was correct.

The Spiral Theta Adjudication Panel declined the question as one of fact rather than law. Cipher Theta declined it as outside its remit. The Registry Theta-7 accepted it, then lost the file during a transfer through Aural Conduit Theta-14 and reconstructed it from memory, with alterations. The grievance remains open. Its three copies are shelved in three different tiers.

Comparison with other holdings

The Archive is frequently compared with the Spiral of Deferred Ascent, whose holdings are said to be identical but which cannot be reached without descending, and with Sub-basement Theta, access to which is provided through Spiral Theta directly and which contains materials the Archive has declined to admit. Expeditionary Party Theta-9 reported on returning from the lower reaches that the Archive appeared to continue below the level at which it is officially stated to end, an observation the Provisional Index to Spiral Theta records without comment.

Visitors to the reading terraces are asked to leave their ladders at the door. The Archive supplies its own.
